having gone up, and having greeted the Church, he went down to Antioch; and after spending some time, he departed, going in order through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples. And see, he was occupying those places, which he had visited before this. But a certain Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by birth, an eloquent man, arrived in Ephesus, being mighty in the Scriptures. Behold, even eloquent men hastened to preach, and so the disciples are traveling abroad. Do you see the progress of the preaching? This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and being fervent in the Spirit, he was speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. But when Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained the way of God to him more accurately. If this man knew only the baptism of John, how was he fervent in the Spirit? For the Spirit was not given in this way. But if even those after him needed the baptism of Christ, much more would this man have needed it. What then is there to say? For the writer did not simply place both things in succession. To me it seems this man was one of the one hundred and twenty who were baptized with the apostles; or if not this, what happened in the case of Cornelius has happened also in his case. But he is not baptized, but when they explained to him more accurately. But this seems true to me, that he also needed to be baptized; since the other twelve knew nothing accurately, not even the things concerning Jesus. It is likely that he was also baptized. But if even John's disciples were baptized again after his baptism, the disciples also ought to have done this. And when he wanted to pass through to Achaia, the brothers, encouraging him, wrote 60.283 to the disciples to receive him. Who, when he arrived, greatly helped those who had believed through grace. For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public, showing through the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ. Now it happened that while Apollos was in Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples, he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him, "But we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism." And Paul said, "John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him; that is, in Christ Jesus." And when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve. These men were far different from him, they who did not even know if there is a Holy Spirit. These then, who also explained the way of the Lord to him more accurately, both send him on his way and give him letters. He therefore also wished to depart for Achaia; but before the brothers encouraged him and gave him letters, he does not depart. Who, when he arrived, it says, helped those who had believed; for he vigorously refuted in public, showing through the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ. From this it shows how Apollos was mighty in the Scriptures. For he vehemently silenced the Jews (for this is the meaning of "refuted"), and made the believers to be more confident and to stand firm in the faith. And it happened, he says, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. These are the regions around Caesarea and the rest. And finding some disciples, he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" That these men did not even believe in Christ is clear from his saying, "in the one who was to come after him, that they should believe." And he did not say, "John's baptism is nothing," but that it is incomplete. And he did not add this simply, but in order to teach and persuade them to be baptized in the name of Jesus; which they also do, and they receive the Spirit by the laying on of Paul's hands. Οὗτοι οὖν, οἳ καὶ ἀκριβέστερον αὐτῷ ἐξέθεντο τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ Κυρίου, καὶ προπέμπουσι, καὶ γράμματα ἐπιδιδόασιν. Ἐβούλετο μὲν οὖν καὶ αὐτὸς ἀπελθεῖν εἰς Ἀχαΐαν· πρὸ δὲ τοῦ προτρέψαι, καὶ γράμματα δοῦναι αὐτῷ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς, οὐκ ἀναχωρεῖ. Ὃς παραγενόμενος συνεβάλετο, φησὶ, τοῖς πεπιστευκόσιν· εὐτόνως γὰρ διακατηλέγχετο δημοσίᾳ ἐπιδεικνύων διὰ τῶν Γραφῶν εἶναι τὸν Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν. Ἐντεῦθεν πῶς ἦν δυνατὸς ἐν ταῖς Γραφαῖς Ἀπολλὼς δείκνυσι. Τοὺς μὲν γὰρ Ἰουδαίους σφόδρα ἐπεστόμιζε (τοῦτο γάρ ἐστι τὸ, ∆ιακατηλέγχετο), τοὺς δὲ πιστεύοντας θαῤῥεῖν μᾶλλον ἐποίει, καὶ ἵστασθαι πρὸς τὴν πίστιν. Ἐγένετο δὲ, φησὶ, Παῦλον διελθόντα τὰ ἀνωτερικὰ μέρη ἐλθεῖν εἰς Ἔφεσον. Ταῦτα δὴ τὰ κατὰ Καισάρειαν καὶ τὰ λοιπά. Καὶ εὑρών τινας μαθητὰς, εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· Εἰ Πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἐλάβετε πιστεύσαντες; Ὅτι οὐδὲ εἰς Χριστὸν ἐπίστευον οὗτοι, δῆλον ἐκ τοῦ εἰπεῖν· Εἰς τὸν ἐρχόμενον μετ' αὐτὸν, ἵνα πιστεύσωσι. Καὶ οὐκ εἶπεν, Οὐδέν ἐστι τὸ βάπτισμα Ἰωάννου· ἀλλ' ὅτι ἀτελές. Καὶ οὐδὲ τοῦτο προσέθηκεν ἁπλῶς, ἀλλ' ἵνα διδάξῃ καὶ πείσῃ αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ βαπτισθῆναι· ὃ καὶ ποιοῦσι, καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα λαμβάνουσι τῇ ἐπιθέσει τῶν χειρῶν Παύλου.
