let us not rejoice over those who are punished, but let us also grieve; let us mourn these, let us weep for these, that we may also receive a reward for this. But now many even rejoice unjustly over those who suffer ill. But let us not do so, but let us show all compassion; that we ourselves may also be deemed worthy of the loving-kindness of God, by the grace and loving-kindness of His Only-Begotten, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
60.307.20 HOMILY 44. And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus,
he called for the elders of the Church. And when they came to him, he said to them: You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time, serving the Lord with you with all humility and with many tears and trials which happened to me through the plots of the Jews, how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
1. See him both hurrying to sail past, and not overlooking, but
arranging everything. Having sent for the rulers, in their presence he recounts the things that had been said. And it is worthy of admiration, how being under the necessity of saying some great things about himself, he endeavors to be moderate. For just as Samuel, when about to hand over the rule to Saul, says in their presence: Have I taken anything from you? You are witnesses, and God; and David, when disbelieved, says: I was in the flock tending the 60.308 the blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you.
When it is necessary to speak with Abraham, He comes Himself; when to go to Sodom, He sends the servants, just as a judge appointing those who are to inflict punishment. And again: Well done, good and faithful servant, you were faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. And this one He blesses Himself; but that wicked one, not He, but servants bind. Knowing these things, let us not rejoice over those who are punished, but let us also grieve; let us mourn these, let us weep for these, that we may also receive a reward for this.
