being cheerful at your good things, even if I have countless troubles, but gloomy at your sorrows, even if I have countless successes. For what hope is there for a teacher, when the flock is corrupted? What life, what expectation? With what confidence will he stand before God? What will he say? For let us suppose that he is not accused, nor gives an account, but is pure from the blood of all; even so he will suffer incurably; since even fathers, though not going to be accused for their children, nevertheless grieve and are tormented. 60.313 And does this not benefit or protect them, he says, that they watch over our souls? But they watch as those who must give an account; and while to some this seems a fearful thing, to me it is of no account after your destruction. For whether I give an account, or whether I do not, it is no benefit to me. May it happen that you be saved, and I give an account because of you; that you be saved, and I be accused as not having fulfilled my part. For I do not care about your being saved through me, but only about your being saved, through whomever it may be. Do you not know the tyranny of spiritual birth-pangs, how one who endures this birth would ten thousand times choose to be cut to pieces, than to see one of those born perishing and being destroyed? How shall we persuade you? From nowhere else, but from what is happening we shall be acquitted of all things concerning you. We too can say, that we have held back nothing; but nevertheless we grieve; and that we grieve is clear from the countless things we prepare and devise. And yet it was possible to say to yourselves: What do I care? I have done my part, I am pure from the blood; but this is not enough for consolation. If it were possible to break open our heart and show it to you, you would see all of you within it with much room, both women and children and men; for such is the power of love, it makes the soul more spacious than heaven. Make room for us, Paul said; we have wronged no one, you are not restricted in 60.314 us. This we also say now: Make room for us; He had all of Corinth in his heart, and said: You also be enlarged; you are not restricted. But I myself could not say this; for I know well that you also love us and make room for us. But what is the gain either of my love or of yours, when the things of God do not advance for us? A cause for greater despondency, an occasion for more ruin. I have nothing to accuse you of; For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. We long to give you not only the Gospel, but also our own souls. We are loved and we love; but this is not what is sought. Let us therefore love Christ first; for the first commandment is, You shall love the Lord your God; and the second is like it, And your neighbor as yourself. We have the second, we need the first; we need the first with much abundance, both I and you. We have it, but not as we ought. Let us love him; you know how great a reward is laid up for those who have loved Christ; let us love him with warmth of soul, so that, enjoying his good will, we may escape the tempest of this present life, and be counted worthy to obtain the good things promised to those who love him, by the grace and loving-kindness of his only-begotten Son, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, power, honor, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Ἀλλ' αὐτὸς οὐκ ἂν ἔχοιμι τοῦτο λέγειν· εὖ γὰρ οἶδα, ὅτι καὶ ὑμεῖς ἡμᾶς ἀγαπᾶτε καὶ χωρεῖτε. Οὐδὲν ἔχω ἐγκαλεῖν ὑμῖν· Μαρτυρῶ γὰρ ὑμῖν, ὅτι, εἰ δυνατὸν, τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν ἐξορύξαντες ἂν ἐδώκατέ μοι. Ἱμειρόμεθα οὐ μόνον τὸ Εὐαγγέλιον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰς ἑαυτῶν ψυχὰς δοῦναι ὑμῖν. Φιλούμεθα καὶ φιλοῦμεν· ἀλλ' οὐ τοῦτό ἐστι τὸ ζητούμενον. Φιλήσωμεν οὖν τὸν Χριστὸν πρῶτον· πρώτη γὰρ ἐντολὴ, Ἀγαπήσεις Κύριον τὸν Θεόν σου· δευτέρα δὲ ὁμοία αὐτῆς, Καὶ τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν.
