prey; we are benefited more than we benefit. I do not command you to sacrifice a calf; give bread to the hungry, a garment to the naked, shelter to the stranger. And that you may not make these things an excuse, there is a common dwelling, that of the Church; cast it down there, and you will have received it; since he also had the reward for things done through the servants. So too were his servants instructed; they ran and did not grumble like ours; for he had made them reverent. He dragged them into war, and they did not grumble; so philosophic were they. For he cared for all alike as for himself; for he almost said, according to Job, that "We were formed alike in the same womb." Therefore, let us also care for our own salvation, and let us take great care of our servants, so that they may be good and diligent; and let our servant also be instructed in the things of God. Virtue will not be difficult for us from now on, if we discipline them. Just as in war, when the soldiers are well-ordered, the general fights easily, but the opposite happens when this is not so; and when sailors are of one mind, the pilot easily handles the rudders; so also here, if the servants are so instructed, you will not be easily provoked, you will not bring charges, you will not be angry, you will not revile. There is even a case where you will be put to shame by your servants, if they are admirable, and they will assist you, and will advise what is good. And from all these things all will be what is pleasing to God, and so the whole house will be filled with blessing, and by doing the things pleasing to God, we shall enjoy much of the help from above, which may it be granted to us all to obtain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. 60.321 HOMILY 46. On the next day Paul went in with us to
James, and all the presbyters were present. And when he had greeted them, he related one by one the things which God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry.
1. This man was the brother of the Lord and bishop of Jerusalem, a man
great and wonderful. To this man Paul enters, just as also before this he is sent to him; and hear how. "On the next day," he says, "Paul went in with us to James." See his freedom from pride. "And all the presbyters were present; and when he had greeted them, he related one by one the things which God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry." Again he relates to them the affairs of the Gentiles, not out of vainglory, God forbid, but wishing to show the loving-kindness of God, and to fill them with much joy. See, then, how when they heard, they also glorified God. They did not extol him or admire him; but they glorified God; for so he narrated as to ascribe it to Him. "And when they heard it, they glorified God, and said to him: You see, brother, how many thousands there are of the Jews who have believed; and they are all zealous for the law. And they have been informed about you, that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or to walk according to the customs." See with how much reserve they themselves speak. He does not discourse authoritatively as a bishop, but they take him as a sharer in their opinion; as if apologizing immediately from the outset, that "We did not wish it." You see the necessity of the matter, "You see how many," he says, "thousands there are of the Jews who have believed?" And they did not say, "How many thousands we have instructed," but "There are." "And these," he says, "are all zealous for the law." Two reasons, both the multitude and their opinion. For neither if they were few should they have been despised, nor if they were many, and not all clung to the law, should it have been made a great matter. Then also a third reason;

αʹ. Οὗτος ὁ ἀδελφὸς ἦν τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ ἐπίσκοπος τῶν Ἱεροσολύμων, ἀνὴρ

Κατηχήθησαν δὲ περὶ σοῦ, ὅτι ἀποστασίαν διδάσκεις ἀπὸ Μωϋσέως τοὺς κατὰ τὰ ἔθνη πάντας Ἰουδαίους, λέγων μὴ περιτέμνειν αὐτοὺς τὰ τέκνα, μηδὲ τοῖς ἔθεσι περιπατεῖν. Ὅρα καὶ αὐτοὶ μεθ' ὅσης ὑποστολῆς φασιν. Οὐχ ὡς ἐπίσκοπος αὐθεντικῶς διαλέγεται, ἀλλ' αὐτὸν παραλαμβάνουσι κοινωνὸν τῆς γνώμης· ὥσπερ ἂν εἰ εὐθέως καὶ ἀπὸ προοιμίων ἀπολογούμενοι, ὅτι Οὐκ ἐβουλόμεθα. Ὁρᾷς τοῦ πράγματος τὴν ἀνάγκην, Θεωρεῖς πόσαι, φησὶ, μυριάδες εἰσὶν Ἰουδαίων τῶν πεπιστευκότων; Καὶ οὐκ εἶπον, Πόσας μυριάδας κατηχήσαμεν, ἀλλ' Εἰσί. Καὶ οὗτοι, φησὶ, πάντες ζηλωταὶ τοῦ νόμου ὑπάρχουσι. ∆ύο αἰτίαι, καὶ τὸ πλῆθος, καὶ ἡ γνώμη.
