And they have all been informed, it says, about you, that you teach apostasy from Moses to all the Jews among the Gentiles, telling them not to circumcise their children, nor to walk in the customs. He did not say, “They heard;” but, “They have been informed,” that is, they were taught and believed, that you teach apostasy from Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children, nor to walk in the customs. Having said this, he added: What then is to be done? The multitude must by all means come together; for they will hear that you have come. Do therefore this that we say to you. They say these things as counselors, not as commanders. We have four men who have a vow on themselves. Take them and purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses, so that they may shave their heads, and all may know that those things of which they have been informed about you are nothing, but that you yourself also walk orderly, keeping the law. They advise him to make his defense by deed, not by word. So that they may shave their heads, it says, and all may know that those things of which they have been informed about you are nothing. They did not say, “that you teach,” but “have been informed,” again by this 60.322 signifying “they were taught,” and that “you walk orderly,” that is, you yourself also keep it abundantly. For this was not the only point of concern, whether he does not teach others, but that he himself also observes it. What then, if the Gentiles learn of it, will they not be scandalized, he says? How? when even we, the teachers of the Jews, have sent to them. But concerning the Gentiles who have believed, we have written, having decided that they should observe no such thing, except that they should keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication. Here it is reproachfully. What he says is this: Just as we enjoined them, though we preach to Jews, so you also, though you preach to Gentiles, cooperate with us. See Paul; he does not say, “And yet I can bring forward Timothy, whom I circumcised;” “and yet I can persuade them with words;” but he was persuaded by them, and did everything; for so it was expedient. For it was not the same to enter into a defense, and to do these things with no one knowing. To also be paying the expenses was above suspicion. And Paul did not blame the apostles for anything, though he suffered so many things, saying that they had been the cause of these things for him; so great-souled was he. And they dragged him, it says, out of the temple; and the doors were shut. For they wanted to kill him, and for this reason they dragged him outside, so as to do this with greater impunity. And as they were seeking to kill him, news came up to the tribune of the cohort, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar; who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down to them. And when they saw the tribune and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. Then the tribune came near, and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and he inquired, who he might be and
