they gave to those setting sail the things for their need and to the others. See them, not even having been freed from the winter, remaining uncared for, but also the reception having become honorable on account of him; for they were all there for three months, being fed. And that they spent so much time, hear how, explaining this, he adds: And after three months we set sail in an Alexandrian ship, which had wintered in the island, with the sign of the Dioscuri. And having landed at Syracuse, we remained for three days. From there, having sailed around, we arrived at Rhegium; and after one day, a south wind having sprung up, we came on the second day to Puteoli; where, finding brothers, we were entreated to remain with them for seven days; and so we came to Rome. And from there the brothers, having heard about us, came out to meet us, as far as the Forum of Appius, and the Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, having thanked God, he took courage. See all these things happening on account of Paul, so that the prisoners, the soldiers, the centurion believed. For if they were made of stone, both through the things they heard him advise, and through the things he foretold, and through the things he wrought by miracles, and through the things they enjoyed from his feeding them, they would have had great impressions about him. See how, when judgment is right, and not preoccupied by some passion, it immediately receives the right judgments and the discerning verdicts. Already the preaching had reached Sicily; so it spread 60.375 also in Puteoli, where also finding some brothers they remain with them. Then also others by report meet them; so great was the zeal of the brothers, that it did not trouble them that Paul was in chains, but they went out to meet him. But observe for me how he also experienced something human. For he took courage, it says, seeing the brothers. Although he had worked so many signs, but nevertheless he received also an addition from the sight of them. From this we learn, that in a human way he was both comforted, and the contrary. And when we came to Rome, Paul was permitted to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him. Do you see? It was granted to him to stay by himself. This too is no small proof of his being greatly admired; for indeed they did not number him with the others. And it happened after three days that he called together the leaders of the Jews. After three days he called the leaders of the Jews, so that their ears might not be preoccupied. And what did he have in common with them? for they were not going to accuse him. But nevertheless he was not concerned about this, but to teach this and that what was said might not reach them beforehand. 2. The Jews, therefore, seeing so many miracles, persecuted, drove away; but the barbarians, having seen nothing, were humane from the misfortune alone. Surely, it says, this man is a murderer. They do not declare it simply, but, "surely," they say; that is, as it is possible to see. And justice, it says, did not permit him to live. So then they also had a concept of providence, and these barbarians happened to be much more philosophical than the philosophers. For they do not permit the things under the moon to enjoy providence; but these believe God is present everywhere, and that, even if one escapes many things, he will not escape in the end. And see, how they do not attack him at all, but show reverence for the time being on account of the misfortune; nor do they parade him about, but speak to one another; for the chains taught them to suspect this; and yet they were prisoners. Let them be ashamed who say, "Do not do good to those in prisons"; let us be shamed by the barbarians; for they did not know who they were, but from the misfortune, for the time being, they learned that they were human beings; wherefore also they deemed them worthy of humanity. But when they were expecting for a long time, it says, that is, as they waited for a long time for him to die. But he both shook off the beast into the fire, and showed his hand having suffered nothing. Seeing this they were both astonished and marveled. But the sign did not happen immediately, but the men spent time on it, so that it might not seem to be a fantasy; thus it was not a delusion, it was not a seizure. And in the neighborhood of that place there were lands belonging to the

Καὶ καταχθέντες εἰς Συρακούσας, ἐπεμείναμεν ἡμέρας τρεῖς. Ὅθεν περιελθόντες κατηντήσαμεν εἰς Ῥήγιον· καὶ μετὰ μίαν ἡμέραν ἐπιγενομένου νότου, δευτεραῖοι ἤλθομεν εἰς Ποτιόλους· οὗ εὑρόντες ἀδελφοὺς, παρεκλήθημεν ἐπ' αὐτοῖς ἐπιμεῖναι ἡμέρας ἑπτά· καὶ οὕτως εἰς τὴν Ῥώμην ἤλθομεν. Κἀκεῖθεν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ἀκούσαντες τὰ περὶ ἡμῶν, ἐξῆλθον εἰς ἀπάντησιν ἡμῖν, ἄχρις Ἀππίου φόρου, καὶ Τριῶν ταβερνῶν. Οὓς ἰδὼν ὁ Παῦλος, εὐχαριστήσας τῷ Θεῷ, ἔλαβε θάρσος. Ὅρα διὰ Παῦλον πάντα γινόμενα ταῦτα, ὥστε πιστεῦσαι τοὺς δεσμώτας, τοὺς στρατιώτας, τὸν ἑκατόνταρχον. Ὁρᾷς; συνεχωρήθη αὐτῷ καθ' ἑαυτὸν μένειν. Οὐ μικρὸν καὶ τοῦτο τεκμήριον τοῦ πάνυ θαυμασθῆναι αὐτόν· οὐ γὰρ δὴ μετὰ τῶν ἄλλων ἠρίθμουν αὐτόν. Ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας συγκαλέσασθαι αὐτὸν τοὺς ὄντας τῶν Ἰουδαίων πρώτους. Μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἐκάλεσε τοὺς πρώτους τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ὥστε μὴ προληφθῆναι αὐτῶν τὰς ἀκοάς. Καὶ τί κοινὸν πρὸς ἐκείνους εἶχεν; οὐ γὰρ ἂν αὐτοὶ ἔμελλον κατηγορήσειν αὐτοῦ. Ἀλλ' ὅμως οὐ τούτου ἐφρόντιζεν, ἀλλὰ τοῦτο διδάξαι καὶ μὴ προστῆναι αὐτοῖς τὰ λεγόμενα. βʹ. Οἱ μὲν οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι τοσαῦτα ὁρῶντες θαύματα, ἐδίωκον, ἤλαυνον· οἱ δὲ βάρβαροι οὐδὲν θεασάμενοι, ἀπὸ μόνης τῆς συμφορᾶς φιλάνθρωποι ἦσαν. Πάντως, φησὶ, φονεύς ἐστιν ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος. Οὐχ ἁπλῶς ἀποφαίνονται, ἀλλὰ, πάντως, φασί· τουτέστιν, ὡς ἔνεστιν ἰδεῖν. Καὶ ἡ δίκη, φησὶ, ζῇν οὐκ εἴασε αὐτόν. Ἄρα καὶ τὸν περὶ προνοίας λόγον εἶχον, καὶ πολλῷ τῶν φιλοσόφων οὗτοι οἱ βάρβαροι φιλοσοφώτεροι ἐτύγχανον. Αὐτοὶ μὲν γὰρ οὐκ ἀφιᾶσι προνοίας ἀπολαύειν τὰ ὑπὸ σελήνην· οἱ δὲ πανταχοῦ νομίζουσι παρεῖναι τὸν Θεὸν, καὶ ὅτι, κἂν πολλά τις διαφύγῃ, οὐ διαφεύξεται εἰς τέλος. Καὶ ὅρα, πῶς οὐκ ἐπιτίθενται διόλου, ἀλλ' αἰδοῦνται τέως διὰ τὴν συμφοράν· οὐδὲ ἐκπομπεύουσιν, ἀλλὰ πρὸς ἀλλήλους λέγουσι· τὰ γὰρ δεσμὰ τοῦτο ἐδίδασκεν ὑποπτεύειν· καίτοι δεσμῶται ἦσαν. Αἰσχυνέσθωσαν οἱ λέγοντες, Μὴ εὖ ποίει τοὺς ἐν ταῖς φυλακαῖς· αἰσχυνθῶμεν τοὺς βαρβάρους· οὐ γὰρ ᾔδεσαν τίνες ἦσαν ἐκεῖνοι, ἀλλ' ἀπὸ τῆς συμφορᾶς τέως, ὅτι ἄνθρωποι ἦσαν, ἐμάνθανον· διὸ καὶ φιλανθρωπίας ἠξίωσαν αὐτούς. Ἐπὶ πολὺ δὲ, φησὶ, προσδοκώντων αὐτῶν, τουτέστιν, ὡς πολὺν χρόνον ἀνέμενον ἀποθανεῖσθαι. Ὁ δὲ τό τε θηρίον ἐξετίναξεν εἰς τὸ πῦρ, καὶ τὴν χεῖρα ἔδειξε παθοῦσαν μηδέν. Τοῦτο ἰδόντες καὶ ἐξεπλάγησαν καὶ ἐθαύμασαν. Οὐκ ἐγένετο δὲ τὸ σημεῖον εὐθὺς, ἀλλὰ τῷ χρόνῳ ἐνδιέτριψαν οἱ ἄνθρωποι, ὥστε μὴ δόξαι φαντασίας εἶναι· οὕτως οὐκ ἦν ἀπάτη, οὐκ ἦν συναρπαγή.
