to the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us courteously. He spoke well thus: for it is a great courtesy, to entertain two hundred and seventy souls. Consider how great the gain of hospitality is; not as being of necessity nor as unwilling, but considering it a gain, he entertained them for three days. Therefore, he rightly receives a reward for such hospitality, and much greater than what he gave; for he heals his father, who was suffering badly from dysentery; and not only him, but he also deems many others who had infirmities worthy of the same; who, in return, present him with honors and provisions. Making this clear, he adds: Who also honored us with many honors; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary. He did not 60.376 receive wages, God forbid; but that which is written is fulfilled: The laborer is worthy of his food. And it is evident that those who received them in this way also received the word of the preaching; for he would not have discoursed so much in three months, unless they had strongly believed and shown fruits; so that from this, one can see a great proof of the multitude of those who believed. And we departed, he says, in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux. Perhaps this was inscribed on it; so given to idolatry were they. See them tarrying, and again hurrying. But Paul was permitted to dwell by himself. Therefore, Paul was so respected, as even to be allowed to be by himself. And no wonder; for if even before this they treated him kindly, much more now. And when the south wind blew, he says, we came the next day to Puteoli, where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome. And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns. That having feared the danger they came out, and these things were sufficient to confirm them. See how they nowhere put in at a city in so long a voyage, but at an island, and they spent the whole winter sailing, while those who sailed with them were being brought into order for the faith, I mean. It was permitted, he says, for him to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him. Very reasonably, so that it was not possible for him to suffer any plot even there; for it was no longer possible to raise a sedition. So that he was not guarding him, but so that nothing unpleasant would happen; for it was no longer possible, with so great a city, and a king, and an appeal, for anything to happen contrary to due process. Thus, always, through things that seem to be against us, all things happen for us; for he was Paul's guard. And having called together the chief of the Jews, he discourses with them; who also, contradicting, depart, and are reviled by him, and dare to say nothing; for the matters concerning him were no longer permitted to their authority. For this is the wonderful thing, that not through things that seem to be for safety, but also through contrary things, all things happen for us. And that you may learn, consider this. Pharaoh commanded the infants to be cast into the river. If the infants had not been cast out, if the command of Pharaoh had not been given, Moses would not have been saved, he would not have been brought up in the palace. When he was being saved, he was not in honor; when he was exposed, then he came to be in honor. And God did this, showing his resourcefulness and ingenuity. The Jew threatened him, saying, "Do you want to kill me?" And this benefited him. Therefore, it happened by providence, so that he might see that vision in the desert, so that the proper time might be fulfilled, so that he might philosophize in the desert, and live in safety. And in all the plots of the Jews against him, the same thing happens; then he is rendered more illustrious, as also in the case of Aaron; they rose up against him, and made him more illustrious; for from this came to him also the variegated priestly garment, and the mitre is put on, and the rest of the adornment of the robe, so that his ordination was indisputable, so that also for the future he would be admired from the plates of brass. You surely know the story; therefore I pass over the narrative. And

Ἐπετράπη, φησὶ, μένειν καθ' ἑαυτὸν σὺν τῷ φυλάσσοντι αὐτὸν στρατιώτῃ. Μάλα εἰκότως, ὥστε μὴ ἐξεῖναι μηδὲ ἐκεῖ ἐπιβουλήν τινα αὐτὸν ὑποστῆναι· οὐ γὰρ ἐνῆν στασιάσαι λοιπόν. Ὥστε οὐκ ἐκεῖνον ἐφύλασσεν, ἀλλ' ὥστε μὴ γενέσθαι τι τῶν ἀηδῶν· οὐ γὰρ ἐξῆν λοιπὸν καὶ πόλεως οὔσης τοσαύτης, καὶ βασιλέως ὄντος, καὶ ἐφέσεως οὔσης, γενέσθαι τι παρὰ τὴν ἀκολουθίαν. Οὕτως ἀεὶ διὰ τῶν δοκούντων εἶναι καθ' ἡμῶν, ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν πάντα γίνεται· φύλαξ γὰρ ἦν τοῦ Παύλου. Καὶ συγκαλέσας τοὺς πρώτους τῶν Ἰουδαίων, διαλέγεται αὐτοῖς· οἳ καὶ ἀντιλέγοντες ἀναχωροῦσι, καὶ ὑβρίζονται παρ' αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐδὲν τολμῶσιν εἰπεῖν· οὐ γὰρ τῇ ἐξουσίᾳ αὐτῶν ἐπετρέπετο λοιπὸν τὰ κατ' αὐτόν. Τὸ γὰρ θαυμαστὸν τοῦτό ἐστιν, ὅτι οὐ διὰ τῶν δοκούντων εἶναι πρὸς ἀσφάλειαν, ἀλλὰ καὶ διὰ τῶν ἐναντίων πάντα ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν γίνεται. Καὶ ἵνα μάθῃς, σκόπει ἐντεῦθεν. Ἐκέλευσεν ὁ Φαραὼ ῥίπτεσθαι εἰς τὸν ποταμὸν τὰ βρέφη. Εἰ μὴ ἐῤῥίφη τὰ βρέφη, εἰ μὴ ἡ πρόσταξις τοῦ Φαραὼ ἐγένετο, οὐκ ἂν ἐσώθη Μωϋσῆς, οὐκ ἂν ἐν βασιλείοις ἐτράφη. Ὅτε ἐσώζετο, οὐκ ἦν ἐν τιμῇ· ὅτε ἐξετέθη, τότε ἐγένετο ἐν τιμῇ. Τοῦτο δὲ ἐποίει ὁ Θεὸς, τὸ εὔπορον αὐτοῦ δεικνὺς καὶ εὐμήχανον. Ἠπείλησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰουδαῖος λέγων· Μὴ ἀνελεῖν με σὺ θέλεις; καὶ τοῦτο αὐτὸν ὤνησεν. Ἄρα οἰκονομικῶς γέγονεν, ὥστε τὴν ὄψιν αὐτὸν ἐκείνην ἰδεῖν τὴν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, ὥστε τὸν προσήκοντα χρόνον πληρωθῆναι, ὥστε αὐτὸν ἐμφιλοσοφῆσαι τῇ ἐρήμῳ, καὶ ἐν ἀσφαλείᾳ ζῇν. Καὶ ἐν πάσαις ταῖς κατ' αὐτοῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐπιβουλαῖς ταυτὸν γίνεται· τότε λαμπρότερος καθίσταται, οἷον καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ Ἀαρών· ἐπανέστησαν αὐτῷ, καὶ λαμπρότερον αὐτὸν ἐποίησαν· ἐντεῦθεν γὰρ αὐτῷ καὶ τὸ ἱερατικὸν ποικίλλεται ἔνδυμα, καὶ ἡ κίδαρις περιτίθεται, καὶ ὁ λοιπὸς τῆς στολῆς κόσμος, ὥστε ἀναμφισβήτητον εἶναι τὴν χειροτονίαν, ὥστε καὶ εἰς τὸ ἑξῆς θαυμάζεσθαι ἀπὸ τῶν πετάλων τοῦ χαλκοῦ. Ἴστε πάντως τὴν ἱστορίαν· διὸ καὶ παρατρέχω τὸ διήγημα. Καὶ
