a man, it seems to me, would have become, gorging and being drunk, and troubled by none of these things. But now cares and anxieties are a training-ground and a school of philosophy, and the leading to the best instruction. Consider also otherwise: let someone be brought up in a palace neither grieving nor caring nor being anxious, and having no cause for anger nor for failure, but let him do all that he may desire, and let him succeed, and let him have all men obeying him; would not such a man become more irrational than any beast? But now the circumstances, the tribulations, are like a whetstone sharpening us. For this reason the poor are for the most part more intelligent than the rich, as if buffeted and drenched by many waves. For a body that is idle and motionless is sickly and unpleasant, but one that is moved and toiling and enduring hardship is more beautiful and healthier; and one might find this to be true for the soul. And iron lying still is corrupted, but being worked it shines; and a soul likewise when it is moved; and the movement of the soul is these circumstances. And skills are lost when the soul is not moved; but it is moved when not all things are easy; for it is moved by opposites. If there were no opposites, there would be nothing to move it; for example, if all things were well made, art would not have found a way to be moved. So also, [if all things were according to our mind, the soul would not have found a way to be moved;] if it were carried everywhere, it would be unpleasant. Do you not see that we also exhort nurses not to carry children constantly, so as not to make it a habit for them, nor to make them spoiled? For this reason those brought up in the sight of their parents become weaker, their untimely and immoderate indulgence ruining their health. Good also is measured grief, good also is care, good also is want; for opposites also make us strong; for each of them becoming immoderate destroys, and the one makes vain, the other breaks apart. Do you not see that Christ also leads His disciples in this way? If they needed these things, much more do we. But if we need them, let us not be indignant, but let us also rejoice 60.379 in tribulations; for these are medicines suitable for our wounds, some bitter, others sweet; but each of them by itself would be useless. Let us therefore have grace to God for all these things; for He does not simply allow these things to happen, but for the benefit of our souls. Therefore, showing our gratitude, let us give thanks, let us glorify, let us endure nobly, considering their temporary nature 60.380, and stretching our mind toward the things to come, so that we may both bear the present things lightly, and be deemed worthy to attain the good things to come, by the grace and loving-kindness of His Only-begotten, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. the chief of the Jews together. And when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against
the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans: who, when they had examined me,
would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me. But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of. For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of

Χάριν τοίνυν ἔχωμεν τῷ Θεῷ ὑπὲρ τούτων ἁπάντων· οὐ γὰρ ἁπλῶς ταῦτα συγχωρεῖ γίνεσθαι, ἀλλ' ὑπὲρ τοῦ συμφέροντος τῶν ἡμετέρων ψυχῶν.
