a blessed life in paradise, being naked in simplicity and an artless life. And they are envied by the serpent, or rather by the spiritual dragon. And the serpent approaches the woman and advises her to taste of the plant of knowledge. Josephus says that at that time all the animals spoke the same language. And she is persuaded, and pleased by the food, she also persuades her husband to partake of the fruit. And they knew they were naked, and from fig leaves they made themselves loincloths, and Adam and his wife hid 1.17 from God because of their nakedness. And God asked the cause, and Adam offered his nakedness as an excuse and attached the blame to the woman; but she said she had been deceived by the serpent. And God, having first cursed the serpent, depriving it of its feet and taking away its voice, according to Josephus, and commanding it to crawl on the ground, and declaring it an enemy to the seed of the deceived, turns to the woman, and makes her subject to the man, and punishes her with the pains in childbirth. Then He also subjects Adam to a penalty; and this was the return to the earth from which he was taken, and to eat bread in sweat, and for the earth to bring forth thorns and thistles for him. And He moves them out of paradise, putting garments of skin on them, perhaps the thicker, mortal, and resistant flesh. From this comes our wretched and painful life and the easy slide towards evil. Therefore children are born to them, of whom Cain was the first, the name meaning possession, because they had acquired a man, and Abel the second; the name signifies mourning; for mourning was destined to come to them on his account. And Abel was a keeper of the flock and practiced virtue, but Cain, being most wicked, tilled the ground. And when it seemed good to them to bring first-fruits from their own labors to God, Abel offered the best of the first-born of his flocks, but Cain brought whatever he chanced upon of the fruits of the earth. And God had regard for Abel's gifts, but He had no regard for Cain's offering. And he, being envious at 1.18 the preference, kills his brother, and becomes accursed by God, and is condemned to groan and tremble. And being cast out from the presence of God, he dwelt in the land of Naid, where he also begot children. This man invented measures and weights and was the first to set up boundary markers on the land, proving himself a teacher of wickedness. And he built a city in the name of his firstborn son, Enoch. And the son of Enoch was Gaidad, and his son was Maouiael, and his was Mathousala, whose son was Lamech. This man took two wives for himself, who were named Ada and Sela, and from both he had seventy-seven children; of whom Joabel was a breeder of cattle and loved sheep-herding, and Joubal invented music and devised the lyre and psaltery, and Thobel, born of Sela, was a blacksmith, that is, a worker of iron and bronze. And to Adam, after the death of Abel, when he was two hundred and thirty years old, another son was born, whom he called Seth. And Adam died, having lived for nine hundred and thirty years. And Seth, when he was two hundred and five years old, begot Enos, who was the first to hope to call upon the name of the Lord God, that is, to call the Lord, God. And Seth, having lived nine hundred and twelve years in all, and leaving sons and daughters, departed. He pursued virtue and left behind descendants who were imitators; they understood the wisdom concerning the heavens, and on two pillars, one made of stone, the other of brick, they inscribed their discoveries, so that they might be preserved for posterity; for Adam had foretold that there would be a destruction of the universe by fire and by water. And from Enos was born Cainan and other sons and daughters, and he died 1.19 having lived nine hundred and five years. And from Cainan sprung Maleleel and other children, and he died, having lived the number of nine hundred and ten years. And the son of Maleleel was Jared, and others, who ended his life at eight hundred and ninety-five years. And Jared was the father of Enoch and of other children besides him, and he died having lived nine hundred and sixty-two years. And the son of Enoch was Mathousala and
