Phanuel, that is, the face of God. And when he experienced pain in the broad sinew during his wrestling with the angel, he forswore eating it, and because of him it has been forbidden to his entire 1.32 race. And having met his brother Esau, they came together and greeted one another. Then Esau departed, and Jacob arrived at Shechem. And while the Shechemites were holding a festival, his daughter Dinah went into the city to observe the festival. Therefore Shechem, the son of the city's king, having seen her, violates her by seizure. Then his father begged Jacob to join Dinah to Shechem; but he did not consent. But Simeon and Levi, the girl's full brothers, while those in the city were feasting for the festival and were heavy-headed, coming by night, kill every male from puberty upwards, both the king and his son. Josephus says these things. But the book of Genesis relates a more plausible account concerning these events. For it says that when Hamor, the father of Shechem, asked for Dinah to be joined to his son, Simeon and Levi said, "If all the males in the city are circumcised, we will give our sister to your son," and that they accepted the proposal and were all circumcised. But on the third day after the circumcision, when the circumcised were in a bad state and suffering pain from the inflammation, they attacked them and killed them all, without Jacob's knowledge. God commanded him, who was angry because of these things, to be of good courage. And Jacob, having come to Bethel, where he had seen the dream, offered sacrifice. And proceeding on, he buries Rachel, who had died from childbirth, in Ephrath. And he called the child from her Benjamin, because of the pain his mother had on his account. And having come to Hebron, a city of the Canaanites, he found his father Isaac still living, but Rebecca had already died. And after 1.33 a short time Isaac also dies, and is buried with his wife in the ancestral tomb, having lived one hundred and eighty-five years. And Esau ruled Idumea, having named the country after himself. For he was called Edom, because once when he returned famished from hunting, and found his brother had prepared lentils for himself for food, he asked him to give them to him; but he compelled him to sell him his birthright in exchange for the lentils. And he yields this to him with oaths on account of the famine; whence he was called Edom, because of the reddishness of the lentils; for their color was very much of that sort. And Edom is called "red" by the Hebrews. And Jacob loved Joseph, the son of Rachel, more than his other children, both because of the grace of his body and the virtue of his soul. Indeed, both his father's affection and the dreams which he had seen moved his brothers to envy him. And one of the dreams was of this sort. In the summer season, he dreamt that while reaping with his brothers, he was binding and setting up sheaves, and his own stood still, but his brothers' ran up and bowed down to his. And in the other, it seemed to him that the sun and the moon and the other stars were bowing down to him. Relating these visions to his father, with his brothers also present, he sought to learn their meaning. And he announced good fortune for the boy, and that a time would come when he would be honored and bowed down to by his parents and his brothers. These things grieved Joseph's brothers, and they looked upon the lad with suspicion. And while the sons 1.34 of Jacob were pasturing their flocks in Shechem, their father sends Joseph to visit them. And they, seeing him, rushed to kill him. But Reuben advised them not to become their brother's murderers, but to throw him into the nearby pit, so that he might die there, and thus the evil would be more moderate. And when the young men agreed with his proposal, Reuben took the lad and gently let him down into the pit. But Judah, seeing some Arab merchants, advised his brothers to sell Joseph to them. And this seeming good, they sell him to the merchants for twenty minas, when he was seventeen years old. But Reuben, coming to the pit by night, in order to bring Joseph out and save him without his brothers' knowledge, when he did not find him, grieving, he accused his brothers.
