he goes up to the mountain; and when he delayed there, the people gathered to Aaron saying, "Make us gods; for as for Moses, we do not know what has become of him." But Aaron, being compelled, commanded each to bring the golden earrings and the jewelry which their wives and daughters wore. And they brought them, and from them they made a molten calf and sacrificed to it. But Moses, coming down from the mountain and carrying the two stone tablets of the testimony in his hands, inscribed on both their sides, when he drew near the camp, he sees the calf, 1.50 and becoming angry he broke the tablets, and taking the calf he burned it and ground it to powder and, casting it into water, made the people drink it. And he commanded the sons of Levi, and they went through the camp and killed many, so that those who fell were numbered at three thousand. And Moses returned to the mountain saying, "Lord, your people have sinned, and now if you will forgive their sin, forgive it; but if not, blot me also out of your book." And the Lord said to him, "Go down, lead this people to the place of which I told you." And the Lord showed to Moses, who had asked to see him, his back parts. And he went down again to the people, carrying two tablets having the ten words written on them, and the appearance of his face was glorified, and the people could not gaze at him, and he put a veil over his face, and thus he spoke to them. And he reported to them what God had commanded concerning sacrifices and purifications, and unclean and clean animals, so that they should abstain from the one and be fed by the other, and concerning unlawful unions, and what women the priests might take in marriage, and what kind the high priests, and concerning the sabbath and the seventh year and the fiftieth, which they call jubilee; and that God had ordered a tabernacle to be made, into which he would come, which would be brought along with them as they moved, and he showed him the measurements of the tabernacle and the design according to which it should be constructed. And the people, rejoicing at these things, brought gold and silver and precious stones and bronze and wood and goats' hair and rams' skins and linen and wool. And he appoints as chief craftsmen of the tabernacle both the son of his sister Mariam, 1.51 Bezalel, and Eliphaz. And when the tabernacle was already made, Moses set it up. And the ark was made of incorruptible wood, which gold covered on all sides, in which they placed the two tablets which had the ten words inscribed on them. Of which the first says there is one God and that him alone must one worship, the second, to make no image of any living thing nor to worship it, the third, not to swear by God for any vain purpose, the fourth, to observe the sabbaths, resting from all work, the fifth, to honor parents, the sixth, to abstain from murder, the seventh, not to commit adultery, the eighth, not to steal, the ninth, not to bear false witness, the tenth, not to covet anything belonging to another. This ark, therefore, they bring into the holy of holies. And in the sanctuary they place a table, and upon it twelve unleavened loaves and a golden lampstand and an altar of incense, of wood within but covered with gold on the outside. And before the tabernacle he set up a wooden altar overlaid with bronze plates, opposite which were placed bowls and craters with spoons, and other vessels which were prepared for sacred service, all of gold. And there were also vestments for the priests, and moreover for the high priest. And God chose Aaron as high priest. And Moses, having gathered the multitude, said, "Men, the work is finished, and God deems Aaron worthy of the honor of the priesthood." And Moses commanded each to contribute half a shekel, that it might be an expenditure for the needs of the tabernacle. The shekel is a Hebrew coin, equivalent to four Attic drachmas. And the number of those contributing was sixty myriads and five thousand five hundred and fifty. And the contribution was made by the free men who were over the twentieth 1.52 year up to the fiftieth. And the tabernacle was made in seven months. And God showed according to
