he celebrated the feast of the Passover. Then the manna also failed them, after they had used it for forty years; for they were already well supplied from the land with all that they needed. On the first day of the feast, Jesus undertook the siege of Jericho, arranging it thus. The priests, carrying the ark, went around the wall, with seven sounding horns, and the council of elders followed; then they returned to the camp. And they did this for six days. But on the seventh, when they had done the same things and gone around seven times, the wall fell down, and the people entered and killed everyone and burned the city. But the spies saved Rahab alone with her household, she having hung a scarlet cord in front of her house. And Jesus gave her fields and held her in honor. And he set curses against those who might wish to rebuild the city, that the one laying the foundations should be deprived of his first child, and the one who finished it should be punished with the loss of his youngest. And a great quantity of silver and gold was gathered from the city, and all of it was dedicated to God as the first fruits of their successes; for it was forbidden to all to appropriate anything for themselves from 1.63 this. But a certain Achar from the tribe of Judah, having come upon a garment woven with gold and a wedge of gold weighing two hundred shekels, appropriated these things, burying them in his tent. After this, when war broke out, the Hebrews were routed and thirty-six of their men fell. This greatly grieved the people. And Jesus, falling on his face, prayed to God. And having been divinely informed that a theft of the consecrated things had occurred, he entrusted the judgment to the lot. And when the lot fell on Achar, he confessed the theft and brought forth the stolen goods. And he was stoned to death with his household, and Jesus besieged Nain and took it. But the Gibeonites and their neighbors, who were related to the Canaanites, fearing they would suffer the same fate as the people of Jericho and those of Nain, send an embassy to Jesus, saying they live very far away and have no kinship with the Canaanites, and asking the Israelites to make a treaty and covenants of friendship with them. Jesus therefore made friendship with them. But when he later learned that they were of the race of the Canaanites, he charged them with their deceit. But they said they did this out of necessity, fearing destruction. And Jesus, so as not to break the oath, makes them public servants. Thus Josephus; but the book of Joshua states that they made them woodcutters and water-carriers for all the congregation and for the altar of God. And when the king of Jerusalem attacked the Gibeonites because of their treaty with the Hebrews, 1.64 Jesus came to their aid and routed the enemies and pursued them as they fled. when also hail from heaven, larger than usual, and thunderbolts fell upon the enemy, and the day was lengthened, God having stopped the course of the sun at the request of Jesus, so that the enemy might not escape with the coming of night. And the kings were also caught hiding in a certain cave, and they were all killed. And Jesus went up again to the hill country of Canaan, and after working a great slaughter of those in it and taking spoil, he came to the camp at Gilgal. And the place of the camp was called Gilgal, as the Israelites now knew themselves to be free from the Egyptians and from the hardship in the wilderness; for the Hebrews call freedom Gilgal. And the Canaanites around Lebanon and those in the plains marched against them, allied with the Palestinians. And their army was thirty myriads of hoplites, ten thousand horsemen and three myriads of chariots. And when God promised victory, a fierce battle took place, so that the entire army of the enemy except for a few was destroyed, and the kings also fell. The fifth year had already passed and no one of the Canaanites was left any longer. And Jesus set up the tabernacle in the city of Shiloh, until it should be possible for them to build a temple. And having gathered the people to Shiloh, he enumerated the cities that had been captured and as many of the
