of weavers, and his spear’s head of six hundred shekels, this man, standing in the middle, shouted 1.90 to the sons of Israel, “Let one of you come down 1.90 and stand against me; and if he strikes me, we will serve you, but if I cast him down, you will be our slaves.” And this he did for forty days. And when Saul sent David back to Jesse, his father had sent him to the camp to bring provisions to his brothers who were serving in the army; for three of the eldest were following Saul. And when David came to his brothers, the foreigner Goliath again, as was his custom, was challenging to single combat and was reproaching the Hebrews because no one dared to join battle with him. But David, having heard these words, became indignant and said to those present, “I will fight him in single combat.” This was reported to the king, and to David, who stood before him, he said, “You will not be able to go against this uncircumcised man to fight; for you are still a boy.” And David said to be confident in God, who strengthened him against the bear and against the lion, when they came upon the flock and seized the livestock, whom he said he pursued and recovered what had been seized, and struck the beasts and killed them. On this account, he said he was confident that [God] would give him [the power] to strike the foreigner and to take away the reproach from the sons of Israel. So he said these things, and the king permitted him to go, and he put his own armor on him. And they were a burden to him, and he took them off, and taking his staff and putting five stones in his bag and carrying his sling in his hand, he rushed toward the foreigner. But he laughed at him and asked if he was coming against a dog with a staff and stones. And David answered 1.91 that he considered him even worse than a dog. But he, becoming angry, and boasting that he would give his flesh to the birds and to the beasts, rushed upon him. But David, hurrying, and putting a stone in his sling, struck the enemy on the forehead. And the blow was powerful, and the foreigner fell on his face. And David, running, and drawing his sword, cuts off the head of Goliath and strips him of his armor. This struck cowardice into the foreigners, and they turned to flight. And Saul leads his own army against them as they fled; and a great number of the Palestinians are killed, and more are wounded, and their camp is plundered. And David brings the head of Goliath to Saul, and dedicates the sword to God. And as the army was returning, the women met them and dancing sang that Saul had slain thousands, but the maidens responded in song that David had destroyed myriads. This provoked Saul to jealousy, saying, “And what does he lack except the kingdom?” And he looked upon David with suspicion. And when an evil spirit fell upon Saul, and David was playing music as was his custom, Saul cast the spear at him; and he did this twice. And David escaped; for the Lord was with him. And the king, fearing him, made him a commander of a thousand, so that in going out against the enemies he might be in danger. But he, with God as his ally, prospered, and the people loved him, and the king's daughter Michal loved David. So the love was reported to the king, and he used the love as an opportunity for a plot. 1.92 For he said he would give his daughter to him, if he brought him one hundred foreskins, thinking that he would fall while fighting the foreigners. David, learning this, went forth with those under him, and struck among the foreigners and brought one hundred foreskins to Saul. But Josephus [says] that David brought not one hundred foreskins, but six hundred heads of foreigners. And he joins to him his own daughter Michal. But seeing David both having God as an ally and being loved by the multitude, he feared even more, and he plotted against him, and attempted to kill him. So to his son Jonathan and to the most faithful of his servants he orders his destruction. But Jonathan, loving David, reveals the order to him, and advises him to be on his guard, and promises to speak on his behalf

Σαοὺλ δὲ τὸ οἰκεῖον αὐτοῖς ἐπάγει στράτευμα φεύγουσι· καὶ κτείνεται τῶν Παλαιστηνῶν πλῆθος πολὺ καὶ πλείονες τραυματίζονται καὶ τὸ στρατόπεδον αὐτῶν διαρπάζεται. τὴν κεφαλὴν δὲ Γολιὰθ προσάγει ∆αβὶδ τῷ Σαούλ, τὴν δὲ ῥομφαίαν τῷ θεῷ ἀνατίθησιν. ̓Επανιούσης δὲ τῆς στρατιᾶς αἱ γυναῖκες συνήντων αὐτοῖς καὶ χορεύουσαι χιλιάδας ὀλέσαι τὸν Σαοὺλ ῃδον, αἱ δὲ παρθένοι μυριάδας τὸν ∆αβὶδ ἀφανίσαι· ἀντῇδον. τοῦτο πρὸς φθόνον ἠρέθισε τὸν Σαούλ, φήσαντα "καὶ τί αὐτῷ ὑστερεῖ πλὴν ἡ βασιλεία;" καὶ ὑπεβλέπετο τὸν ∆αβίδ. ἐπιπεσόντος δὲ τῷ Σαοὺλ πνεύματος πονηροῦ, καὶ τοῦ ∆αβὶδ κατεπᾴδοντος ὡς εθος αὐτῷ, τὸ δόρυ εβαλε κατ' αὐτοῦ ὁ Σαούλ· καὶ δὶς τοῦτο ἐποίησε. καὶ ὁ ∆αβὶδ ἐξέκλινε· κύριος γὰρ ην μετ' αὐτοῦ. δεδιὼς δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ βασιλεὺς χιλίαρχον ἐποιήσατο, ιν' εἰς τοὺς πολεμίους ἀπιὼν κινδυνεύσῃ. ὁ δὲ τῷ θεῷ συμμαχούμενος εὐωδοῦτο, καὶ ὁ λαὸς ἠγάπα αὐτόν, καὶ ἡ τοῦ βασιλέως θυγάτηρ Μελχὸλ ηρα ∆αβίδ. προσηγγέλθη ουν ὁ ερως τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ ος εἰς λαβὴν ἐπιβουλῆς ἐχρᾶτο τῷ ερωτι. 1.92 εφη γὰρ δώσειν αὐτῷ τὸ θυγάτριον, εἰ ἑκατὸν ἀκροβυστίας ἐνέγκοι αὐτῷ, οἰηθεὶς πεσεῖσθαι αὐτὸν τοῖς ἀλλοφύλοις μαχόμενον. τοῦτο μαθὼν ὁ ∆αβὶδ ἐπορεύθη μετὰ τῶν ὑπ' αὐτόν, καὶ ἐπάταξεν ἐν τοῖς ἀλλοφύλοις καὶ ηνεγκεν ἀκροβυστίας τῷ Σαοὺλ ἑκατόν. ὁ δὲ ̓Ιώσηπος οὐχ ἑκατὸν ἀκροβυστίας κομίσαι τὸν ∆αβίδ, ἀλλὰ ἑξακοσίας κεφαλὰς ἀλλοφύλων. καὶ ζεύγνυσιν αὐτῷ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ θυγατέρα Μελχόλ. ὁρῶν δὲ τὸν ∆αβὶδ καὶ τῷ θεῷ συμμαχούμενον καὶ τῷ πλήθει φιλούμενον, ετι μᾶλλον ἐδεδίει, καὶ ἐπεβούλευεν αὐτῷ, καὶ κτανεῖν ἐπεχείρει. τῷ ουν υἱῷ ̓Ιωνάθαν καὶ τοῖς πιστοτάτοις τῶν οἰκετῶν τὴν ἀναίρεσιν αὐτοῦ ἐπιτάττει. ̓Ιωνάθαν δὲ φιλῶν τὸν ∆αβὶδ δηλοῖ αὐτῷ τὸ ἐπίταγμα, καὶ φυλάττεσθαι παραινεῖ, καὶ ἐπαγγέλλεται διαλεχθήσεσθαι περὶ αὐτοῦ
