to his father and to reveal everything to him. And indeed he both spoke with him and brought him to gentleness; for having changed, Saul swore that he would do no harm to David. And Jonathan, having declared these things to David, brings him to the king, and he was with him as before. But when the Palestinians were stirred up again and came against the Hebrews, David is sent by Saul to oppose them, and he returns with victory. But with the man's successes, Saul's envy against him also increased. And when the evil spirit came upon him again and was choking him, David was present, striking his lyre and soothing him with song. But Saul, holding his spear, hurled it at David; but he, foreseeing it, both dodged and withdrew. And Saul sent guards by night to David's house, so that he might kill him after daybreak. But Michal his wife, 1.93 knowing this, let her husband down through a window; and he escaped. And in the morning, when Saul sent for David, Michal prepared the bed as if someone were lying in it, and under the covers she placed the liver of a newly slain goat, so that by its movement the cover might be shaken and give the appearance that someone was lying on the bed; she brings in those who were sent and says that her husband is sick. And they reported this to Saul, and he orders him to be brought on the bed. But those who were sent went, and lifting the cover from the bed, they understood the trick and reported it to the king. Thus David, having escaped death, came to Samuel at Armathaim and stayed with him in Naioth in Ramah. Therefore Saul sends men there also to take David. But they went and, finding the company of prophets, they themselves also prophesied. When the king learned this, he sends others, and when they were affected in the same way, he sent still others, and when the third group was also seized by the spirit, he himself set out in anger, and when he drew near, he himself also began to prophesy. when also those present there uttered the saying, "Is Saul also among the prophets?" And coming to where Samuel was, as if becoming out of his mind and stripping off his clothes, he lay naked all day and night. But David fled from there and reported to Jonathan his father's attempt against him; but he disbelieved. And David asked him to make a test of his father's mind and to declare it to him as he waited outside the city. Therefore, 1.94 Jonathan spoke to his father about David, and having learned his father's intention thirsting for the man's death, he reports everything to him secretly himself, and urges him to save himself. And he made David swear to remember him, and if he should happen to die, to show some kindness to his descendants. Having said these things, Jonathan returned, but David, fleeing, comes to Nob to Abimelech the high priest. And he inquired how he had come alone. And he said that something secret had been commanded him by the king, "and so that no one might know about this, I have come alone; and he ordered my young men to meet me here." Having said these things, he asked for loaves. And the high priest said that he had no others than the holy ones, and "if you have kept yourselves from a woman, take these and eat." And he also asked that a sword be given to him. However, the high priest answered that he had no other weapon except the sword of Goliath, which he himself had dedicated to God. And having taken these, David went away to Gath to Achish, king of the foreigners. And being recognized who he was and becoming afraid, he feigned madness and went about and acted as if he were out of his mind. And thus having been saved from the foreigners, he comes to the tribe of Judah, and hides in the cave of Adullam. There his brothers and his relatives came to him; then others also flocked there, so that they all became about four hundred. And he departs from there to the Moabites, and he asks the king of Moab to let his parents sojourn with him until he should see to what end his affairs would come. And he agrees and receives Jesse and his house. And David went into the land of Judah, this Gad
