at the command of the prophet. But Saul, 1.95 learning that a multitude had gathered to David, having called together his friends, reproached them for attaching themselves to him. And a certain servant of Saul, a Syrian by race, Doeg by name, who happened to be present when the high priest gave the loaves to David and the sword of Goliath, being then in attendance on him, reported to the king that he saw David coming to the high priest and inquiring of God through him and receiving provisions and the sword. And the king, having summoned the high priest, charged him with conspiracy with David. And he ordered the soldiers attending him to kill the high priest and all his family; but when they were afraid to lay a hand on those consecrated to God, he commanded Doeg to carry out the murders. And he killed them all, being three hundred and five, and struck their city, destroying everyone from youth upwards, sparing neither women, nor infants, nor any other age. But only one son of the high priest escaped death, called Abiathar, who, fleeing to David, reported what had happened. And when the foreigners had invaded Keilah and were plundering the country, David, at God's command, went against them with the four hundred, and struck them and brought back all the spoil. But Saul sent a multitude of soldiers to kill him there. And he departed from Keilah into the wilderness. And Saul did not cease seeking to put him to death. And Jonathan came to David and encouraged him and urged him to have good hopes. And when David fled to the rock in the wilderness of Maon, and Saul came with a great 1.96 multitude, David was in danger of being captured, had not a messenger come to Saul saying that foreigners had attacked the land; for leaving David, he rushed out against the enemies. Then it was reported to him that David was lodging in the wilderness of Engedi, and taking three thousand men, he went on his way. And as he went, he was troubled by his stomach. And there was a cave there, in the inner part of which David and those with him were hiding; Saul entered this to relieve himself. And David was urged by those with him to kill Saul. But he was not persuaded, but secretly cutting off the corner of his robe, he took it. And when the king came out, David came forth and cried out after Saul. And the king looked toward the voice. And David bowed down and said, "Do not believe the slanders. Behold, the Lord delivered you into my hands; for when I cut off the corner of your robe in the cave, it was easier for me also to kill you." And at the same time he showed him the piece and cried out, "May the Lord judge between me and you." And Saul, being pricked to the heart by these things, raised his voice and wept and said to David, "You are righteous; for I am the cause of evils to you, but you have repaid me with good. Wherefore I am persuaded that God is keeping you to be king of Israel. Give me then assurances that you will not destroy my house, but will preserve my family." And David swore to Saul, and they departed from each other. And then Samuel the prophet also died, a just and good man; who ruled Israel after Eli, alone for twelve years, and with Saul for eighteen. And David departed into the wilderness of Maon. 1.97 And he sent to Nabal the Carmelite, a rich man, who was shearing his flocks, men to greet him and to ask him to give to those with him and to him, whatever he might choose, since they had kept his flocks and his shepherds unharmed. But Nabal, being harsh and rash, answered David's men inhumanly and shamelessly, saying, "Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse?" and calling him a runaway slave. At this David was angered, and swore to destroy all of Nabal's possessions, and went against him with four hundred soldiers. But Nabal's wife, being prudent and beautiful, having learned both how David had greeted her husband and how he had kept their possessions safe, and all the blasphemous things Nabal had answered to David, without communicating anything to her own husband, taking all sorts of many gifts on donkeys to David

τοῦ προφήτου κελεύσαντος. ὁ Σαοὺλ δὲ 1.95 μαθὼν οτι πλῆθος ηθροισται πρὸς ∆αβίδ, συγκαλεσάμενος τοὺς φίλους ὠνείδιζεν αὐτοὺς ὡς ἐκείνῳ προστιθεμένους. δοῦλος δέ τις Σαοὺλ Σύρος τὸ γένος, ∆ωὴκ ονομα, παρατυχὼν οτε τοὺς αρτους ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς εδωκε τῷ ∆αβὶδ καὶ τὴν ῥομφαίαν τοῦ Γολιάθ, παρεστηκὼς τότε αὐτῷ, ἀπήγγειλε τῷ βασιλεῖ ὡς ειδε τὸν ∆αβὶδ παραγενόμενον πρὸς τὸν ἀρχιερέα καὶ ἐρωτῶντα δι' αὐτοῦ τὸν θεὸν καὶ ἐπισιτισμὸν λαβόντα καὶ τὴν ῥομφαίαν. μεταπεμψάμενος δὲ τὸν ἀρχιερέα ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπενεκάλει αὐτῷ συνωμοσίαν μετὰ ∆αβίδ. καὶ προσέταξε τοῖς παρεστηκόσιν αὐτῷ ὁπλίταις κτεῖναι τὸν ἀρχιερέα καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γενεὰν αὐτοῦ· εὐλαβηθέντων δ' ἐκείνων ἐπενεγκεῖν χεῖρα τοῖς τῷ θεῷ ἱερωμένοις, τῷ ∆ωὴκ ἐπιτάσσει τοὺς φόνους. καὶ ος ἀπέκτεινεν απαντας τριακοσίους οντας καὶ πέντε, καὶ τὴν πόλιν αὐτῶν ἐπάταξεν, ἡβηδὸν απαντας ἀνελών, οὐ γυναικῶν, οὐ νηπίων, οὐχ ἑτέρας ἡλικίας φεισάμενος. εις δὲ μόνος υἱὸς τοῦ ἀρχιερέως διέδρα τὸν θάνατον ̓Αβιάθαρ καλούμενος, ος φυγὼν πρὸς ∆αβὶδ ἀπήγγειλε τὰ γενόμενα. Τῶν δὲ ἀλλοφύλων ἐμβεβληκότων εἰς Κεϊλὰ καὶ τὴν χώραν ληιζομένων, ὁ ∆αβὶδ κελεύσαντος τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπῆλθεν αὐτοῖς μετὰ τῶν τετρακοσίων, καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτοὺς καὶ τὴν λείαν απασαν ἐπανήγαγεν. Σαοὺλ δὲ στέλλει πλῆθος στρατιωτῶν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ ἀναιρήσοντας. ὁ δὲ ἀπῆλθεν ἐκ Κεϊλὰ εἰς τὴν ερημον. καὶ Σαοὺλ οὐκ ἐπαύετο ζητῶν θανατῶσαι αὐτόν. ̓Ιωνάθαν δὲ ηκει παρὰ τὸν ∆αβὶδ καὶ παρεθάρρυνεν αὐτὸν καὶ παρεκάλει ἐλπίδας εχειν χρηστάς. ἐπεὶ δὲ ∆αβὶδ ἐπὶ τὴν πέτραν κατέφυγε τὴν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Μαάν, καὶ ὁ Σαοὺλ ἐπῆλθε μετὰ πλή1.96 θους πολλοῦ, ἐκινδύνευε ληφθῆναι ∆αβίδ, εἰ μὴ αγγελος ηκε τῷ Σαοὺλ ὡς ἀλλόφυλοι τῇ χώρᾳ ἐπέθεντο· καταλιπὼν γὰρ τὸν ∆αβὶδ ἐπὶ τοὺς πολεμίους ἐξώρμησεν. ειτα ἀπηγγέλη αὐτῷ ὡς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Γαδδὶ αὐλίζεται ὁ ∆αβίδ, καὶ τρισχιλίους λαβὼν ἐπορεύετο. ἀπιὼν δὲ ὑπὸ τῆς γαστρὸς ἠνωχλήθη. καὶ ην τι σπήλαιον ἐκεῖ, ἐν ῳ ∆αβὶδ καὶ οἱ μετ' αὐτοῦ ἐνδότερον κατεκρύπτοντο· τοῦτο εἰσέδυ Σαοὺλ εἰς ἀπόπατον. καὶ ∆αβὶδ ἠρεθίζετο παρὰ τῶν μετ' αὐτοῦ κτεῖναι Σαούλ. ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἐπείσθη, ἀλλὰ τὸ πτερύγιον τῆς διπλοΐδος αὐτοῦ λάθρᾳ ἐκτεμὼν ελαβε. καὶ ἐξελθόντος τοῦ βασιλέως προελήλυθεν ὁ ∆αβὶδ καὶ ἐβόησεν ὀπίσω Σαούλ. καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἀπεῖδε πρὸς τὴν φωνήν. καὶ προσεκύνησε ∆αβὶδ καὶ ειπε "μὴ πίστευε ταῖς διαβολαῖς. ἰδοὺ παρέδωκέ σε κύριος εἰς τὰς χεῖράς μου· οτε γὰρ ἐν τῷ σπηλαίῳ τὸ τῆς διπλοΐδος σου πτερύγιον ἀπέτεμον, ῥᾷον ην μοι καὶ ἀνελεῖν σε." καὶ αμα τὸ τμῆμα αὐτῷ ὑπεδείκνυε καί "δικάσαι κύριος ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ" ἐξεβόησε. καὶ Σαοὺλ πρὸς ταῦτα κατανυγεὶς ηρε τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ κλαύσας εφη τῷ ∆αβίδ "δίκαιος σύ· ἐγὼ μὲν γὰρ αιτιός σοι κακῶν, σὺ δέ μοι ἀνταπέδωκας ἀγαθά. οθεν πείθομαι οτι βασιλέα σε ̓Ισραὴλ τηρεῖ ὁ θεός. δὸς δή μοι πίστεις ὡς οὐκ ἐξολοθρεύσεις τὸν οικόν μου, ἀλλὰ διατηρήσεις τὸ γένος μου." καὶ ωμοσε ∆αβὶδ τῷ Σαούλ, καὶ ἀπῆλθον ἀπ' ἀλλήλων. ̓Απέθανε δὲ τότε καὶ Σαμουὴλ ὁ προφήτης, ἀνὴρ δίκαιος καὶ χρηστός· ος ηρξε τοῦ ̓Ισραὴλ μετὰ τὸν ̓Ηλεὶ μόνος μὲν ετη δώδεκα, μετὰ δὲ Σαοὺλ ὀκτωκαίδεκα. καὶ ∆αβὶδ εἰς τὴν ερημον ἀπῆλθε Μαάν. 1.97 καὶ ἀπέστειλε πρὸς Νάβαλ τὸν Καρμήλιον, πλούσιον ανδρα, κείροντα τὰ ποίμνια αὐτοῦ, τοὺς προσεροῦντας αὐτῷ καὶ ἀξιώσοντας δοῦναι τοῖς μετ' αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτῷ, καθὼς αν προαιροῖτο, ἀνέπαφα τηρήσασι τὰ ποίμνια καὶ τοὺς ποιμένας αὐτοῦ. Νάβαλ δὲ σκληρὸς τυγχάνων καὶ ἰταμός, ἀπανθρώπως τοῖς τοῦ ∆αβὶδ ἀπεκρίθη καὶ ἀναιδῶς "τίς ὁ ∆αβίδ;" εἰπών "καὶ τίς ὁ υἱὸς ̓Ιεσσαί;" καὶ δραπέτην καλέσας αὐτόν. ἐπὶ τούτοις θυμοῦται ∆αβίδ, καὶ ωμοσεν ἐξολοθρεῦσαι τὰ τοῦ Νάβαλ πάντα, καὶ ἀπῄει πρὸς ἐκεῖνον σὺν τετρακοσίοις ὁπλίταις. ἡ δὲ τοῦ Νάβαλ γυνὴ συνετὴ ουσα καὶ ὡραία, μαθοῦσα οπως τε ∆αβὶδ προσεῖπε τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς καὶ ὡς ἀσινῆ τὰ αὐτῶν συνετήρησε καὶ οσα τῷ ∆αβὶδ ὁ Νάβαλ ἀπεκρίθη βλάσφημα, μηδὲν κοινωσαμένη τῷ οἰκείῳ ἀνδρί, λαβοῦσα ἐπὶ τῶν ονων ξένια παντοῖά τε καὶ πολλὰ πρὸς τὸν ∆αβὶδ
