having disguised herself in clothes, went away. And the prophet, knowing the act, said, "Do not hide yourself, wife of Jeroboam. Go and tell your husband that, since you have forsaken God and made for yourself molten gods, expect that the kingdom will be taken away and you yourself with all your family will be destroyed. And because the multitude also followed you in your impiety, that will not remain unpunished. But go, woman, and you will find your son dead, who will also be buried and mourned; for he alone of Jeroboam's house was good." And the woman went away and found her son dead, and she reported to her husband the words from the prophet. But he was in no way improved by these things, being without understanding. And while Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, was reigning in Jerusalem, the priests and Levites among the Israelites, and as many of the people as understood what was good, left their own cities and came to Jerusalem; and from this the kingdom of Rehoboam was strengthened. But he also acted impiously toward God, and the whole 1.131 house of Judah neglected the worship of God. Therefore Shishak, the king of Egypt, also came up against Jerusalem with a heavy force in the fifth year of the reign of Rehoboam. Having shut him up, Rehoboam, in the city with the people, he begged God to give them salvation, and they confessed the sins they had committed against God. And God, being entreated, said that he would not destroy them, but would give them into the hands of their enemies. When Rehoboam therefore received the Egyptian into the city under a treaty, he, breaking the treaty, plundered the treasures of God and emptied the royal treasuries, and took away all the golden weapons that Solomon had made and the golden spears that David had dedicated. And Rehoboam died, having lived fifty-seven years, of which he had reigned for seventeen, leaving his son Abijah as his successor. Against him Jeroboam marched out, having always been at war with Rehoboam as well. But Abijah did not fear the attack, but drawing up his own men against him, he won a famous victory, so that Jeroboam no longer dared to array his forces against him. And Abijah died, having reigned in Jerusalem for three years, having done evil in the sight of the Lord. And Asa his son reigned, observing the divine laws according to his own forefather David. And Jeroboam also died, having completed twenty-two years in his reign. And Nadab his son succeeded him, he too being impious like his father. While besieging Gibbethon, a city of the foreigners, he was conspired against by Baasha son of Ahijah, and he died, having reigned for two years. And Baasha, having taken control of the kingdom of the ten tribes, destroyed the entire house of Jeroboam. And this man also, like Jeroboam, transgressed the law 1.132 and likewise caused the people to sin. And God threatened him through Jehu the prophet to destroy his house as he did the house of Jeroboam. And he also died, having reigned over Israel for twenty-four years. And Elah his son became the successor to his father's kingdom. whom Zimri, the commander of his cavalry, killed while he was drunk, after he had reigned for two years, and he took away the kingdom and destroyed the entire house of Baasha. But the army of the Israelites, which was besieging Gibbethon, learning that Zimri, having killed Elah, had become king, proclaimed their own commander Zimri king in the camp, and having seized the city of Tirzah with him, they take control of it. But the former Zimri, entering the inmost part of the palace and setting it on fire, destroyed both it and himself, having held power for seven days. Then the people were divided, and one part of them chose Zimri, and the other Tibni. But the followers of Zimri prevailed, and having killed Tibni, they secured an undisputed rule for Zimri. who at first lived and reigned in Tirzah, but then on Mount Mareon, on which he built a city that is called Samaria, he having named the mountain Samaraion from the name Shemer, from whom he bought it; having become worse than those before him. And he ended his life in Samaria, having reigned for twelve years. And the kingdom passed to Ahab the
