to fight and kill one another's soldiers, they rushed without order to plunder the spoils. and when the enemy surrounded them, some were killed, and others fled. But the Israelites, pursuing, invaded Moabitis and both razed the cities and devastated the country. But the king of Moab, returning to the city, led his firstborn son up onto the wall and out of despair sacrificed and offered him as a whole burnt offering to the god. Seeing this, the kings, pitying him for his despair, lifted the siege. And Jehoshaphat, returning to Jerusalem, died, having lived for sixty years, and having reigned for twenty-five of them, being a man both pious and just. And leaving many children, he made the eldest the successor of the kingdom, named Joram, the same name as the king of the Israelites who was his maternal uncle. And in Samaria, a certain widow came to Elisha as he was staying there, weeping that because she was in debt and did not have the means to repay the debt, her sons were being taken away by the creditor to be his slaves. 1.146 And the prophet asked her what she had in the house; and she said nothing other than a very little oil. And he commanded her to borrow many vessels and to pour from the oil into all of them. The woman did as commanded, and all were filled with oil; and she reported to the prophet what had happened. And he advised her to sell the oil and pay off the debt and to use the remainder for her living. And being a guest of the Shunammite woman and resting in her house, as she had no child, he foretold to her that she would conceive and bear a son. And according to the prophet's prediction, she gave birth. But when the child grew up, he died; and the woman went to Elisha at Carmel, and falling at his feet, she wept over her misfortune. And he commanded his attendant Gehazi to go, giving him his own staff, so that he might place it on the dead child. And the woman swore not to return unless he himself would go with her. So the prophet was persuaded, and going, he found the boy lying on his bed; and having prayed, he went up on the bed and lay down with the boy and breathed into him. And when the prophet had done this seven times, the dead one was brought back to life, and he gave him to his mother alive. From there he went away to Gilgal. And there was a famine, and the sons of the prophets came to him. And he ordered his servant to prepare a stew for them. And that one gathered herbs from the field, with which colocynth was also mixed in; and the plant is poisonous; and having cooked it, he served it to the men. But while eating they recognized the colocynth, and cried out to the prophet as if they were about to die. But he, ordering flour to be thrown into the pot, permitted them to eat, 1.147 and nothing harmful happened to anyone from the food. And when someone brought him twenty loaves of bread and cakes of figs, he commanded his servant to set these before the people. But when he said, "What would these be for a hundred men?", he said, "Give these, and let them eat; for they will be satisfied and will leave leftovers." And the word became deed. Now Naaman, being a great man with the king of Syria, had leprosy. And an Israelite girl having been taken captive, Naaman's wife had her as a slave. Who said to her mistress, "If my lord would go to the prophet Elisha, he would be freed from his disease." And she reported the girl's words to her husband, and Naaman brought what was said to the king of Syria. And the king wrote a letter to the king of Israel concerning the healing of Naaman. And Naaman, taking ten talents of silver and six thousand gold pieces and ten changes of clothes, went to Samaria and delivered the letter to the king. And he, having read it, tore his clothes, saying that "The king of Syria is seeking a pretext against us." But Elisha, learning these things, sent a message to the king of Israel: "Let Naaman come to me." and when he had come, he sent a message declaring that he should go to
