to come to us; for it is shameful for us, if we should let such a woman pass without having spoken with her." And Bagoas said to Judith, "Come to my lord to be honored in his presence, and drink wine with us, and you shall become as one of the women who stand in the house of Nebuchadnezzar." And Judith, having adorned herself, went away, and having entered to Holofernes, she reclined, and ate and drank what her maid had prepared for her. And the heart of Holofernes was ecstatic and he was inflamed with desire for the woman. And when the drinking was prolonged, he drank very much wine and became drunk. And he lay on his bed with a heavy head from drunkenness, and all had gone, and Bagoas shut the tent, having left Judith alone inside. And she commanded her maid to watch for her exit; for she would go out to pray. Holofernes, therefore, being overwhelmed with drunkenness, lay there and was sleeping a sleep brother to death, but she, having called upon God and having drawn his scimitar, cut off his head, and going out she gave it to her maid, and went away as if to pray, according to her custom. And having approached her city, she cried out to those at the gates to open for her. And having entered, she recounted what wonders God had worked through her, and she brought forth the head of Holofernes, and advised to hang it from the battlements, and for them, having put on their full armor, to go out at dawn; "For when the Assyrians see you," she said, "they will run to the tent of their own general, and finding him killed, they will be astounded, and fear will fall upon them, and they will be turned to flight, and you will follow after them and you will cut them down, and the plains will be filled with the dead." Having given this counsel to her fellow citizens, she said, "Call Achior for me;" and to him when he came she showed the head of Holofernes. And the man was astounded, and said, "Tell me what you have done." And she recounted in the presence of all what God had done through her, and how she had kept her chastity and widowhood undefiled. And Achior believed in God and was circumcised. And the rulers of the city and its populace have hung the head of Holofernes from the wall and have done the other things according to the counsel of Judith. And they cut down the Assyrians like grass, and having plundered their camp, they were filled with much spoil. And for Judith, the tent of Holofernes was set apart and all that was in it, which also, having gone to Jerusalem, she dedicated as a votive offering to God. And she sang a song to him, crowned with an olive branch, and all Israel, and she returned to her house, and grew old in chastity, and died, having lived one hundred and five years. So much for the story of Judith; next must be recounted briefly also the story of Tobit. Tobit, then, was descended from the tribe of Naphtali, and was taken captive in the days of Enemessar, king of the Assyrians. And he was pious toward God and just toward men, and while his fellow tribesmen sacrificed to Baal, he himself sacrificed to God, going to Jerusalem, and according to the ordinances of the law he regulated his life, and having been taken captive, he was not defiled by the foods of the Gentiles. And he became honored by Enemessar, and acquired much property, and of this he shared with those of his own kindred who were in need. And going to Media, he entrusted to one of the countrymen dwelling there, to Gamaliel, ten talents of silver. And taking a wife of his own people, Anna, he begat from her a son, Tobias. And when Enemessar died, and his son Sennacherib succeeded to the rule of the Assyrians, and campaigned against Judea and shamefully fled from there and returned to his own country, and in a rage on account of the defeat was killing very many of the Israelites, Tobit would bury them by night. And being discovered doing this and being sought, he fled, and all the things of his house were plundered. And not yet fifty days having passed, he indeed
