we will lodge with Raguel, who happens to be your kinsman, whose daughter Sarah is prudent and beautiful, and I will speak concerning her, that she be given to you as a wife." But he said, "I have heard that the girl has been given to seven men, and all died in the bridal chamber, because a demon loves her and destroys those who woo her; and I fear that I too might be killed by it." And the angel says, "Listen to me, and let there be no word to you of the demon. For if you go into the bridal chamber, place upon the coals some of the heart of the fish and of the liver, and the demon, having smelled their odor, will flee, and will no longer return." And they entered the house of Raguel. And when he learned about Tobias, that he was the son of Tobit, he kissed him, and having heard that Tobit was blind, he wept; and he received them gladly. And the angel told Raguel to join Sarah to him; and he agreed, and calling his daughter and taking her by the hand, he gave her to Tobias, and taking a scroll he wrote a contract. And after dinner, they led Tobias into the chamber to her. And as he went, he took the coals, and putting on them some of the heart and liver of the fish, he made smoke, and the smell of these drove the demon away. And Raguel during the day sent one of the maids to see if Tobias was alive. And when she returned and said that he was alive, Raguel blessed God. And he said to Tobias, "Let us celebrate the wedding for fourteen days, and you shall not go out from here before these have passed. 1.222 And then taking half share of my possessions, go, and the rest you will receive when I and my life's partner have died." Then Tobias says to Raphael, "Brother Azarias, take for me the bond and go to Rages to Gamaliel and bring the silver; for if we delay, my father will be greatly distressed." And the angel went and delivered the bond to Gamaliel and received the silver and returned. And when the days of the wedding had passed, Tobias says to Raguel, "Send me away"; and taking his wife and half of Raguel's possessions, he departed. And when they had just come near Nineveh, the angel says to him, "Let us run ahead, let us prepare the house. But take in your hands the gall of the fish, and your father will open his eyes, but you anoint them with the gall, and being stung he will rub them, and will cast off the white films." And his mother sat watching the road; and when she recognized her son coming, she hastened and says to Tobit, "Your son is coming," and running up she kissed him and said, "I have seen you, child, and now if I die, I do not care." But Tobit was going out to the door, stumbling. And Tobias took hold of him and anointed his eyes with the gall, and they were stung, and he rubbed them, and the white films were scaled off from them. And seeing his son, he blessed God. And when it was reported to Tobit what had happened to Tobias in Media, Tobit went out to meet his daughter-in-law, and seeing her he blessed her. And those in Nineveh, seeing him seeing, and hav1.223 ing heard what great things God had done, were amazed. And Tobit said to his son, "Give now, child, the wages to the man who went with you; indeed, it is necessary even to add to it." But he said, "Father, it is just for him to receive half of what I have brought." And he said to Raphael, "Take for me, brother Azarias, half of all that we have brought, and go in health." Then the angel, calling the two aside, reported all the great things that God had done with them, and said that he was Raphael, and that he had not come of his own accord, but was sent by God. And he advised them to bless God and to confess what great things he had done with them. "For it is good," he said, "to keep the secret of a king, but to proclaim gloriously the works of God." And when they heard these things, they fell at his feet, and rising up they no longer saw him, and
