of the army. And the messengers were informing Cyrus of this, and he ordered, if they were friends, to meet them as quickly as possible, raising their right hands. And the Hyrcanians, having heard these things, came forward immediately, raising their right hands as it was said. And having greeted them he says, "tell me, how far is it from here to where the enemy leaders are and their main body?" And they said a little more than a parasang. He therefore ordered the Hyrcanians to lead. And they led, while he himself marched with the Persians holding the center, and he placed the cavalry on either side. When daylight came and the enemies recognized what was happening, no one fought, but some fled, and others were killed without a fight. 1.234 Croesus, the king of the Lydians, sent the women with the covered carriages ahead by night, so that they might travel more easily in the cool, for it was summer, and he himself followed with the cavalry. And they say that the ruler of Phrygia on the Hellespont did the same things. And when the fugitives overtook them, and they recognized what was happening, they also fled. And the Hyrcanians kill the king of the Cappadocians while he was still nearby. And while the others pursued, Cyrus ordered those with him to ride around the camp, and to kill those coming out with weapons, but to the ones remaining he proclaimed that they should bring their weapons bundled together, and leave their horses at their tents; and that whoever did not do so would be deprived of his head. Those who had weapons indeed threw them down, bringing them to one spot, and the appointed men burned these. But Cyrus, considering that they had come having neither food nor drink, proclaimed that all the overseers of the tents be present, and when they were present he said, "Come, men, prepare twice as much food in each tent as you were making daily for your masters and their servants." And they did as they were instructed. And some of the Medes, having seized wagons that had been set in motion and turning them back full of things an army needs, drove them forward, while others brought covered carriages of the noblest women, and showing Cyrus what they brought, they drove away again. But Cyrus was vexed at these things and blamed himself, and calling together the taxiarchs he advised that the Persians also acquire cavalry, so that with this they might pursue the horsemen and 1.235 overtake the fugitives; and the others agreed. And when it was already past midday, the Mede and Hyrcanian cavalry rode up, bringing captive horses and men. To the captive men he said, "Go away, cultivating your land and inhabiting your houses and living with your wives and enjoying your children, and announce these things to the others also; for there will be one new thing for you, that not the same man who ruled you before will rule you, but all other things will be the same for you." They therefore, making obeisance, went away; But Cyrus said, "It is time now, O Medes and Armenians, to dine; and dinners have been prepared for you as we, O best of men, were able. And you too, O Hyrcanians," he said, "lead them to the tents, the leaders to the largest ones, and the others as seems best, and dine yourselves; for your tents are safe and unharmed." And they did as they were ordered; But Cyrus sent many of the Persians around to guard the camp, so that if anyone approached from outside, he might not escape notice, and if anyone from within tried to run away, he might be caught. And the Persians passed the time in this way. On the next day he ordered the spoils to be distributed to the soldiers, and the horses to be given to the Persians, so that they too might be horsemen. and "for Cyaxares," he said, "choose whatever you know is pleasing to him; but for the Persians," he said, "with me, whatever is left over, that will be enough; for we have not been raised in luxury, so that perhaps you might laugh at us, if you were to put anything stately on us; just as I know that we will provide much laughter for you also sitting on the horses, and I think, falling to the ground too." And 1.236 having called the taxiarchs he ordered them to take the horses and, having drawn lots, for each to take an equal number. And at this point
