they acquitted, and accused the Jews of seditions and revolutions. Caesar, however, does not appoint Archelaus as king, but gives him half of his father's domain, promising to name him king as well, if he should rule well; and the annual tribute of the country assigned to him was six hundred talents. Dividing the other half portion in two, he distributed it to Antipas and Philip, Herod's other sons; and for Antipas, the country assigned made a contribution of two hundred talents, while the part given to Philip brought in one hundred talents. And to Salome he gives, in addition to what Herod left her, the palace in Ascalon; and from all these a tribute of sixty talents was brought in for her. And so these things were arranged; but a certain young 2.6 Jew insinuated himself into Herod's family, 2.6 since in appearance he resembled Alexander, Herod's son who had been executed. And taking along a certain countryman, a wicked man and capable of confusing matters, he called himself Alexander, the son of Herod, claiming that while others had been killed by some of those sent to destroy both brothers, they themselves had been saved and stolen away. And with such words he deceived those he met, and from there having collected a great deal of money, he hastened to Rome. But Caesar disbelieved that Herod could be so easily deceived, and having brought the pseudo-Alexander into his sight, he was not deceived. For he had an appearance similar to Herod's Alexander, but he was worn out by manual labor, and his body had grown harder, not softened by luxury like the other's. Caesar therefore inquired about Aristobulus, where he might be; and when that one said he had been left in Cyprus, so that if anything terrible should happen to me, the line of Mariamne might not completely fail, Caesar, taking the pseudo-Alexander aside privately, urged him to speak the truth in return for receiving his safety. And he reveals the villainy to Caesar. But Caesar, seeing that he was robust for manual labor, assigned him to the rowers; but the one who conspired with him in these matters, he executed. But Archelaus, having received the ethnarchy, takes away the high priesthood from Joazar son of Boethus, and appoints Eleazar his brother in his place. And he takes to wife Glaphyra, the daughter of Archelaus, and wife of his brother Alexander, by whom she also had children, although it was forbidden by the law 2.7 to marry the wives of brothers who have children by the deceased. And after a short time, having cast out Eleazar, he brought in Jesus the son of See in his place. And completing his tenth year in office, he was accused before Caesar by his subjects of having conducted matters cruelly and altogether tyrannically. Caesar therefore quickly summons him, and after hearing the accusers and him, he decrees exile for him, and carried off his property. And the future was revealed to Archelaus in a dream. For he seemed to see ten ears of corn, ripe and full of grain, being eaten by oxen. Others therefore interpreted the dream in other ways, but Simon, an Essene by race, said that the vision brought a change of fortune for Archelaus, but not for the better. For the oxen are a symbol of hardship, being animals that toil at their work and are indicative of a change of fortune, because through them the earth is plowed and not allowed to remain motionless, and the ten ears of corn signify a number of years; for in the course of a year these are filled out and the harvest is completed, and that the time of his rule had come to an end for Archelaus. And another dream was seen by the wife of Archelaus, Glaphyra. For she, as has been related, was formerly married to Alexander, the brother of Archelaus; and when he was put to death, she was married to Juba, king of the Libyans; and when he too departed this life, she became Archelaus's, after he had sent away Mariamne who was living with him, and this when she had children by Alexander. At any rate, the woman dreamed that Alexander stood by her and blamed her, saying, "Glaphyra, you have proved the saying true which says that wo2.8men are unfaithful to their husbands. For you married me as a virgin,
