Agrippa, being magnificent and lavish in giving, when his mother died, spent some of the money on himself, living extravagantly, some on gifts, and most of it on the freedmen of 2.20 Caesar. And he quickly fell into want. And when his son Tiberius died, he forbade his son's companions from coming into his sight, lest through them, coming into remembrance of him, he be stirred up to grief. Therefore, for this reason and because he was in want of money, he returned to Judea in bad circumstances. Being pressed by his many creditors to pay his debts, and not having the means, he came to the thought of suicide. But his wife Cypros perceived his intention; she was the daughter of Phasaelus the nephew of king Herod, born to him from Salamsio, Herod's daughter, whom he had by Mariamne who was killed by him, as has been related. This Cypros, therefore, living with Agrippa, and sensing his plan, restrained him from it, and sent to Herodias, who lived with Herod the tetrarch, she being Agrippa's sister, revealing the intention of her kinsman, and asking her to help and to urge her own husband to assist. They sent for him and gave him a dwelling in Tiberias, and also assigned him some money for his sustenance. But after a time, a dispute having arisen between Herod and Agrippa, Agrippa removed to Flaccus, the governor of Syria, who was friendly towards him from Rome, and he stayed there, having been received by Flaccus. And Agrippa's brother Aristobulus was there also, and being at odds with his brother, he made Flaccus hostile to him with slanders; and Agrippa was driven out from there. But he, having come to extreme poverty, wished to sail to Italy, and asked Marsyas his freedman to procure money for him by borrowing it from somewhere. He approached Petrus, a freedman of 2.21 Bernice, Agrippa's mother, and Petrus said that upon making a bond for twenty thousand Attic drachmas, he would receive the twenty thousand minus two thousand five hundred. And Agrippa agreed, and having received the loan, was about to sail away. But Herennius Capito, procurator of Jamnia, demanded from him three hundred thousand pieces of silver owed to Caesar, and for this reason ordered him to stay. But Agrippa, pretending to obey, departed by night. And having sailed down to Alexandria, he asked Alexander the alabarch to grant him a loan of twenty myriad. But he said that he would not grant it to him, but he would grant it to his wife Cypros, both for her love of her husband and her other virtue. And when she had received the loan, Agrippa sailed away to Italy, while Cypros returned with the children to Judea. And coming before Caesar Tiberius, he was received kindly. But when a letter from Herennius Capito was brought to Caesar, stating that Agrippa had fled while being pressed for a loan of three hundred thousand, he was angered, and ordered that he not be granted entrance to him until he had paid the debt. But he, having borrowed, paid off the debt, and again went in to Tiberius. And Caesar ordered him to attend his grandson and to wait on him. But Agrippa inclined more toward Gaius, who was the grandson of Antonia, the mother of Germanicus and of Claudius who ruled after Gaius. Waiting on him, he was beloved by him. And once when both were going out together, a conversation about Tiberius arose. And Agrippa, invoking the gods, prayed that Tiberius would quickly stand aside from power for Gaius. But Eutychus, a freedman of Agrippa, having overheard the 2.22 words, went to Caesar as if to tell him something for his salvation. But he, being slow in all things, also looked down on those who brought him any report on his own behalf. For he neither gave audience to ambassadors quickly, saying, that upon their prompt return others might not come and a crowd be formed for him, nor did he appoint successors to governors and procurators sent by him, unless they happened to die first. And he said he did this out of foresight for his subjects, so that having had sufficient time for gains, they might be less keen for wrongdoings. and as an example a wounded man
