and he was called Germanicus and Princeps Senatus, and he prayed to live and to rule for as long as would be advantageous to the public, and in all things he was eager to seem democratic, and spending very little on himself, he spent very much for the common good. And restoring and adorning dilapidated buildings, he would inscribe on them the names of their original builders, and he helped cities and private citizens, and he enriched many of the senators who had become poor, and gifts were immediately counted in his sight, so that the donors might not embezzle any of them, knowing that this had happened under Augustus. And he neither killed anyone for money nor at that time did he confiscate anyone's property, nor did he levy any money outside of what was customary. Indeed, to Aemilius, who had sent more money than was appointed, he wrote back that "I wish my sheep to be shorn, but not to be flayed." And he was accessible and affable, and he honored the magistrates as in a democracy and would rise for the consuls, and he associated with his companions as if a private citizen, and he visited them when they were sick, 3.4 taking no guard with him; and when one of them died, he himself read the eulogy. And he ordered his mother Livia to conduct herself similarly toward everyone. But she was very puffed up, and for a time the letters of Tiberius also bore her name, and she attempted to manage all other things as if she were sole ruler, and did not wish to rule as his equal, but even to be pre-eminent over him, boasting that she herself had made him emperor. But at first he was annoyed with her; then he stopped her from public affairs, but let her manage the household; and since she was burdensome even in these matters, he went abroad and got away from her. And for a time he lived most prudently, and he punished others who were licentious, and he rebuked and was annoyed with his son Drusus, whom he had by Agrippina his former wife, who was both licentious and cruel. And once he said to him that "while I am alive you will do nothing violent or insolent; and if you dare anything, not even when I am dead." Thus he did these and other things as long as Germanicus lived; but after this he changed many of these things. For when the things left to the people by Augustus had not yet been given, as the corpse was being carried through the forum, someone approached and whispered in his ear, and when asked what he had said, he said that he had been ordered to tell Augustus that they had not yet received anything, he immediately killed him, and said, as if joking, that he might become his own messenger to him, but to the others he distributed what had been left. And when his grandson, whom he had by Drusus, died, he abstained from none of his usual 3.5 activities, saying that the affairs of the living should not be given up for the sake of the departed. And a certain Clemens, who had been a slave of Agrippa and resembled him, pretended that he himself was Agrippa; and having come into Gaul he won over many there, and many in Italy, and finally he set out for Rome as if to take back his grandfather's monarchy. However, Tiberius captured him by means of some men who pretended to share his views, and having tortured him, in order to learn something about his conspirators, when he revealed nothing, he asked him "How did you become Agrippa?" And he answered, "In the same way that you also became Caesar." And his wife Julia he neither brought back from the exile to which she had been condemned for licentiousness by her father Augustus, but he even confined her, so that she perished from ill-treatment and starvation. And when many deemed it right that the month of November, on the sixteenth of which he had been born, should be called Tiberius after him, he said, "And what will you do if there should be thirteen Caesars?" In these circumstances Germanicus died in Antioch, bewitched and poisoned by Piso. For human bones were found buried in the house where he was staying. And lead tablets containing some curses with his name. And that his body was destroyed by poison was made clear when it was brought into the forum and shown to those present. And when he died, Tiberius and Livia were pleased, but the others were most violently grieved. For he was most handsome in body, and most excellent in soul,
