Domitian, elated, said to the senate, "I have prevented the Nasamones from existing." For he was already demanding to be considered a god, and took extreme delight in being called master and god. These things were not only said, but also written. And during a spectacle, when much rain and a violent storm suddenly occurred, he allowed no one to leave the spectacle, but while he himself kept changing cloaks, he did not permit them to change into anything; and from this many, having fallen sick, died. One would not be able to enumerate those punished by him. And many men and women of the wealthy were punished for adultery; some of whom he himself had debauched. And for other reasons many were both fined and put to death. For a certain woman was killed because she undressed in front of his image, and another for having consulted astrologers. And a certain Metius, whom rumor proclaimed was destined to rule, he exiled and killed, accusing him that on the walls of his bedchamber he had the inhabited world drawn. And a certain sophist, because he had composed a practice exercise against tyrants, he punished with death. And many also perished for practicing philosophy, and the rest were driven out. And while doing such things, he was conspired against by both Parthenius and Sigerus his chamberlains and Entellus, who was in charge of the imperial documents, and 3.60 Stephanus, a freedman. Neither his wife Domitia, nor Norbanus the prefect, nor his colleague Petronius was ignorant of the plot. For Domitia, being hated by him, feared that she might be put to death, and the others no longer loved him. And it is said that Domitian, suspecting all of them, was planning to kill them, and having written down their names, he placed the list in his bed under the pillow; and a certain child, having taken the list, carried it away, not knowing what he was carrying. And Domitia, having met him, and having read what was written, revealed it to the others; and because of this they hastened the plot. And many signs that were not auspicious occurred for him. And a certain Larginus Proclus, having predicted in Germania that on this very day Domitian would die, was for this reason sent under arrest to Rome; and having been asked by him, he said that it would so happen even then. And having been condemned to die, his execution was postponed, so that he might be killed after the day on which he said Domitian was going to die; but when Domitian was slain on that day, he was saved. And another man, having told him when and how he would perish, was asked in what way he himself would also die; and having said that he would be devoured by dogs, he was condemned to be burned alive and was thrown into the fire. But when a great rain poured down, the pyre was extinguished, and dogs, finding him lying on it with his hands tied behind his back, tore him apart. And to Domitian, as he was resting at midday, Parthenius sent in Stephanus, as being stronger than the others. And Domitian was indeed struck, but not a fatal blow, but having been thrown down by him he lay there; 3.61 then he was finished off by him and others. And so he was slain, and Stephanus also perished, as those who had not taken part in the conspiracy rushed upon him. And Apollonius of Tyana, who was a Pythagorean philosopher, but especially a sorcerer, was then staying in Ephesus and discoursing to the crowd at the hour in which Domitian was being killed, as was later confirmed from what happened on both sides, for some time stood speechless, then cried out, "Well done, Stephanus, strike the villain; you struck him, you wounded him, you have killed him." And Philostratus, who wrote the life of Apollonius, also recorded this thus. And Domitian lived for forty-four years and ten months and twenty-six days, and he ruled for fifteen years and five days. And in the fourth year of his reign, the first high priest of the church of the Alexandrians after Mark the apostle died, and Abilius succeeded him, becoming the second bishop of Alexandria. And in the twelfth year of his rule, when Anencletus died, Clement took over the high priesthood of Rome, being its third bishop, according to Eusebius. This is the
