the daughter of the chief of the priests in the city of Heliopolis. 1.37 From whom children are born to him before the famine, of whom the elder was Manasseh; which means "forgetful," because he found forgetfulness of his misfortunes; and Ephraim the younger; and this signifies "restored," because the freedom of his ancestors was restored to him. From then came the time of want. And the famine took hold not only of Egypt, but also of the country where Jacob dwelt. Therefore he sends his sons to Egypt to buy grain, keeping only Benjamin with himself as he was the youngest. So they came to Joseph. And he, though not recognized, recognized his brothers, and said that they had come as spies. And they said where they had come from, and that they were of one father still living, and that another younger brother was with their father. But Joseph said they would give him proof of the truth, if they would bring their younger brother to him. So he gives grain to them, having secretly placed the silver in each one's sack; and he kept Simeon to be a hostage for their return. The sons returned to Jacob carrying the grain, and they reported what had happened, and the detention of Simeon caused him sorrow, and he did not consent to give Benjamin to be taken to Egypt. And when the grain had now been used up, since it was not otherwise possible for them to go to Egypt unless they also brought Benjamin with them, yielding to necessity the father gives him, and double the price of the grain, and gifts for Joseph. And when they came to Egypt, they brought the gifts to him. And he, seeing Benjamin and being deeply moved, withdrew so that he might not be seen weeping. Then he receives the brothers for a meal, 1.38 and with double portions he honored Benjamin, and he commands the steward of the grain to give them grain and to put the price in their sacks, and to also throw a silver cup into Benjamin's load. And when these things were done, the brothers went away, having taken Simeon. But horsemen surround them as they were leaving, accusing them of the theft of the cup, and searching they found the cup in Benjamin's load. So the horsemen led Benjamin to Joseph, and his brothers, tearing their garments, wept and followed along. And Joseph, having reproached them as ungrateful, freed the rest, but was content with only the detention of Benjamin. But they were possessed by helplessness. But Judah, speaking and arguing many things persuasively for pity, brought Joseph's emotion to the test. And he, no longer able to feign anger, makes himself known to his brothers, and confessed his thanks to them as having been joint causes of the things planned by God concerning him. "Go therefore," he says, "and declare these things to my father, and having taken him and all the kindred, move here; for there will still be a famine for five years." Having said these things, he embraces his brothers and honors them with gifts. And so they departed; and Jacob, having learned the things concerning Joseph, immediately set out for him, bringing all those with him; and they were seventy-five. And now when he was near Egypt, Joseph comes out to meet him. And he, from joy, almost fainted. And Pharaoh, having heard that Jacob and those with him had arrived in Egypt, 1.39 was glad, and when Jacob came to him, he welcomed him. And having learned that those with him were shepherds, he granted them residence in the city of Heliopolis. And as the famine intensified, Joseph gave the grain to the Egyptians for money. And when this failed, they bought it for their cattle, then they also gave up their land, so that they might be fed. And so Pharaoh having become master of all property except that of the priests, for their land remained to them, when the famine now had ceased, Joseph, gathering the Egyptians each into his own city, both bestowed the land on them and urged them to be industrious, paying the fifth of the fruits to Pharaoh. And Jacob, having spent seventeen years in Egypt, fell sick and died, having foretold how those from his generation would dwell in the land of Canaan. and to the others of his sons a possession
