of the tribe, let them leave the inheritance in their father's tribe," and thus he ordered that the inheritance of each remain in the tribes. And when forty years had already passed since the Israelites had come out of Egypt, lacking thirty days, Moses, having gathered the people, being one hundred and twenty years old, announced to them his own end. and having given much advice, and having given laws in 1.60 books and the order of their own government, and having commanded them to march against the Amalekites, and having demanded an oath from them concerning the keeping of the laws, and having incited the leader Jesus to march against the Canaanites, "Behold," he says, "I am going to our ancestors; for God has shown me this day of my arrival to them." But the multitude wept, and their lamentation was inconsolable and so great that even Moses himself was overcome by the emotion and shed tears. And as he went to where he was about to disappear, all followed him, beating their breasts. But he, waving his hand at those far off, ordered them to stay, and only the senate and the high priest Eleazar and the general Jesus escorted him, until he came to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho; from where the Lord showed him the land which the sons of Israel were about to inherit, saying to him, "See this with your eyes, but you shall not enter into it." And having come to this mountain, which happened to be high, he sent away the senate, but took Eleazar and Jesus with him. And while speaking with them, a cloud suddenly enveloped him and he disappeared. And they have written in the holy books that he died, so that no one, on account of the excess of his virtue, might dare to say that he was deified. And he lived his whole life for one hundred and twenty years, of which he ruled for the third part, lacking one month. And they mourned him for thirty days. These things Josephus says, but the book of Deuteronomy at the end contains the following, word 1.61 for word: "And Moses the servant of the Lord died, and no one knows of his death to this day." And when the mourning had already ceased, Jesus sends spies to Jericho, and having summoned the leaders of the tribe of Reuben and of Gad and of Manasseh, he reminded them of the agreements made with Moses. And with fifty thousand armed men following, he advanced to the Jordan. And the spies who were sent, having arrived at Jericho, observed the whole city, but being recognized, they are reported to the king of the country; and he immediately ordered them to be arrested. And when the woman with whom they had taken refuge, called Rahab, learned of the approach of those seeking the men, she hid them, placing bundles of flax over them, and to those seeking them she said that those unknown men, having dined with her before the sun set, had departed. And they, since the woman had thus deceived them, rushed off, some in one direction and some in another, pursuing the men. But Rahab urged the men to go to their own people and to remember her and to pay her a reward when they had conquered the land of the Canaanites. And they confessed that they were grateful, and when the city should be captured, they instructed her to shut her property and her household in the lodging, and to hang a scarlet thread before the doors, so that the house might be recognizable and be preserved. And so they were saved and went to their own people and reported what they had done. And while the Jordan was flowing high, thus Jesus led the Hebrews across it. The priests went first, carrying the ark, then the Levites, bearing the tabernacle, and the people followed these. 1.62 And when the priests, having entered first, the flow of the river was cut off, all crossed over with confidence. And the priests stood in the middle until the multitude crossed over; then they too came out, letting the stream go free. And they encamped ten stadia before Jericho. And Jesus, having set up an altar from the stones, which each of the tribal leaders, by his command, had taken from the bottom of the Jordan, sacrificed upon it and the
