Thus, according to her mother-in-law's counsel, Ruth went out to glean in the field of Boaz. And he, seeing the girl and learning who she was, permitted her to reap what she was able and to keep it, and he ordered the farmhand to provide her with a meal. And she, having also received roasted grain from him, kept it for her mother-in-law, and departed late, carrying both the barley she had gathered, and she recounted to her what had happened with Boaz. And again she went out with the female servants of Boaz. But Naomi planned for Ruth to lie down with him, and she sends her daughter-in-law, instructing her to lie down at the feet of the sleeping man on the threshing floor and to sleep. And she did so, but Boaz, sensing her around midnight, asked who she was. And when he found out, he kept quiet then, but in the morning, having woken Ruth, he instructed her to go to her mother-in-law; "but I," he said, "will ask the one who is a closer kinsman to you than I, and if he wishes to take you, you will go to 1.78 the man, but if he refuses, you will lawfully live with me." So the woman departed and reported everything to Naomi. And Boaz, for his part, called together both Ruth and the kinsman before the council of elders and said to him, "Do you hold the inheritance of our kinsman Abimelech and of his sons?" And when that man agreed to have it according to the laws through kinship, he said, "Therefore one must not remember the laws by halves, but do according to them in all things. It remains then for you to marry the wife of Mahlon, the son of Abimelech, so that you may raise up seed for the kinsman." But he refused, yielding both the inheritance and the woman to him. Accordingly, according to the law, before the council of elders Ruth removed that man's sandal and spat in his face. And so Boaz took her, and she bore Obed from him; which in Greek is translated as "serving". And from Obed comes Jesse, and from him David, who reigned over those of Israel and left the rule to his own children, it having lasted for twenty-one generations. And while Eli the high priest, as has already been related, was leading the people, his two sons Hophni and Phinehas were plagues, transgressing in all things, and though their father admonished them, they did not turn back. But God, angered by their transgressions, through Samuel, who was still a boy, revealed to Eli what he and his sons and his house would suffer. Samuel was the son of Elkanah, a Levite man, with whom lived two wives, of whom one was named Hannah, and the other Peninnah. And the one had children by Elkanah, but Hannah was deprived of offspring. And when the man arrived with both his wives in Shiloh 1.79 and had sacrificed, since it was time for the feast and her children sat with Peninnah, because Hannah was alone, she wept for herself, and running to the tabernacle of God she begged the Lord to grant her offspring, vowing to consecrate the firstborn to God. But as she lingered in her prayers, Eli, sitting before the tabernacle, both reckoned her to be drunk and sent her away. But she said, "I have drunk no wine nor strong drink, sir, but being in deep sorrow because of my childlessness, I am poured out." And the priest said to her, "Go, and may God grant you your request." And returning home with her husband, she conceives and bears Samuel; which one might call "asked of God." And when the child was grown, she brings him to Eli according to her vow, to be raised for God, growing his hair, and living in the temple, and using water for drink. And when he was already twelve years old, he prophesied. And once, God called him by name while he was sleeping. But he went to the high priest, as if he were being called by him. And this happened three times. But Eli, understanding the call to be from God, said to Samuel, "If you are called again, say, 'Here I am, Lord.'" And when the boy did so, the one calling said to him that a grievous disaster would befall the Israelites, and that Eli's sons would die together, and the priesthood would be transferred to the house of Eleazar. But Samuel did not want to reveal the words to the priest, but being compelled by oaths, he reported everything just as he had heard. From this point the Palestinians against the Israelites
