as those sailing on board were trying to learn the cause, Jonah was chosen by lot. And when he was interrogated as to who he was, he related the things concerning himself, and urged them to throw him into the sea; "for not otherwise," he said, "would you escape the danger." So he was thrown, and the surge subsided. And a great fish, having swallowed the prophet, after three days and as many nights, vomited him out alive and safe. And he asked forgiveness of God for his disobedience, and was sent again to proclaim what he had been commanded. And he went and proclaimed that in three days Nineveh would be overthrown. And the king of the city and all the people, believing the prophet, turned to repentance and besought God to have mercy on them. And he, being moved by the repentance of the multitude, turned away the destruction from them. And Jeroboam, having reigned for forty-one years, dies. And after him, Azariah his son took power. 1.161 But Uzziah, king of Jerusalem, was pious towards God and just towards his subjects; wherefore he also conquered many of the foreigners and made them tributaries. But having prospered and become puffed up, he fell from his duty. And dressed as a priest he attempted to burn incense to God on the golden altar; but when Azariah the high priest and the priests tried to prevent him and advised him not to transgress the law, he threatened them with death if they did not keep quiet. At this, a light as it were shone in the temple and striking the king's face caused leprosy to break out upon it. And the priests pointed out the affliction to the king and advised him to go out of the city. And having lived thus for some time, he died of despair, having reigned for fifty-two years, and having lived in all sixty-eight, having handed over the rule to his son Jotham. But Azariah, the son of Jeroboam, having reigned over the Israelites for six months, died after living impiously, having been murdered by Shallum. And Shallum, having reigned for thirty days, was slain by Menahem, who reigned over Israel in his place. And when Pul, the king of the Assyrians, made war against him, by giving him a thousand talents of silver, which he had collected from the people, he put an end to the war. And after reigning for ten years, Menahem, having been impious and cruel, died, having passed the kingdom on to his son Pekahiah. And he also, having been impious and cruel, was slain, having been murdered by Pekah the son of Remaliah, who reigned in place of the one who was slain, having himself also carried out his rule impiously and unlawfully. at which time Tiglath-pileser the king of the Assyrians 1.162, having come upon the land of the Israelites, both destroyed many cities and led away into his own country a captivity not easy to count. And Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Jerusalem, being pious and just, took care of both the city and the temple, and made the Ammonites tributaries, having defeated them in battle. And Nahum, prophesying at that time, foretold the destruction of the Assyrians; and his prophecy came to pass after one hundred and fifteen years had passed. And life failed Jotham, having lived forty-one years, and having reigned for sixteen. And the rule of Jerusalem passed to Ahaz his son, who acted impiously towards God and transgressed his laws; for he worshipped idols and set up an altar for them in Jerusalem and offered his own child as a burnt offering to them. Against him Rezin, ruler of the Syrians, and Pekah, king of the Israelites, conspiring together, besieged him in Jerusalem for a long time. And Rezin, having taken control of other cities, slaying their inhabitants and settling Syrians in them, returned to Damascus; but Ahaz, with only Pekah remaining, joined battle with him and was defeated, losing twelve myriads of the people and many of the notables and his son. And Pekah withdrew to Samaria, he and his army, having removed a great multitude of captives to their own land. But a certain prophet in Samaria, meeting them before the walls, reproached them as having taken captive their kinsmen 1.163 and
