having left many in the camp, having journeyed through the night, he attacks the men of Antiochus around dawn; and fighting he killed many, and pursuing the rest, so that over three thousand fell. And after the defeat of the enemies, Judas returned and plundered their camp, and having taken much spoil and abundant wealth, he returned to his own land rejoicing. But in the following year, Lysias, having gathered a larger army, invaded Judaea. And Judas, engaging with his vanguard, is victorious. Therefore Lysias, taking up the rest of his force, returned to Antioch, and prepared to invade Judaea with a greater army. But Judas, having gone up to Jerusalem to cleanse the temple, and having found it desolate and in some places burned down, lamented. And having cleansed it, he brought in new vessels: a lampstand, a table, a golden altar, and he rebuilt a new altar of sacrifice from stones not cut with iron, and he burned incense and offered whole burnt offerings and placed loaves upon the table. And these things happened on the day on which the temple had been defiled and the religion profaned, three years having passed, according to the prophecy of Daniel made four hundred and eight years before. And from then on the Jews celebrate the restoration of their religion, calling it Lights. And having fortified the city, he established guards. And when the surrounding nations destroyed many of the Jews, lying in wait through envy, Judas defended them with wars and held them back. 1.320 But Antiochus, having learned there was a city in Persia boasting in wealth, named Elymais, and in it a temple of Artemis full of costly offerings, set out against it and besieged it. But being repulsed by those in the city who came out against him, he fled and came to Babylon and lost most of his army. And while Antiochus was grieving over this, the defeat of his generals by the Jews is reported to him. And with this grief added, he fell ill; and knowing that he would die, he called together those under him, and said that he was suffering thus because he had wronged the nation of the Jews and plundered the temple. Saying these things he expired, leaving Philip, one of his friends, as regent of the kingdom, and giving him the diadem and the ring, so that he might bring these to his son Antiochus. But Lysias, learning that Antiochus had died, appointed his son king, calling him Eupator. But the Macedonians in the citadel of Jerusalem were harassing the Jews going up to the temple to sacrifice. Therefore Judas hastened to destroy the garrison and besieged it vigorously. The boy Antiochus, learning of this, was angered, and with a great force set out against Judaea and Jerusalem. But Judas, meeting him, kills about six hundred of the vanguard. And Eleazar, the kinsman of Judas, who was also called Auran, seeing the tallest of the elephants armed with royal breastplates, and thinking that the king was riding upon it, attacked it with a fierce rush, and getting under the belly of the beast, he struck and killed it. But it, having been shaken down upon 1.321 Eleazar and pressing him with the weight of its body, destroyed him. And Judas, seeing the strength of the enemy, returned to Jerusalem and prepared for a siege. And Antiochus, coming to Jerusalem, besieged the temple, with those within defending it vigorously, but as food ran out for them, many fled away. However, as Philip, whom the dying Antiochus had left as regent of the kingdom, was usurping the throne, Lysias the general and Antiochus, knowing this, made a truce with the besieged, so that they could use their ancestral laws. Therefore Antiochus, having been admitted into the city and seeing the temple was very well fortified, broke his oaths and tore down the wall; and thus he returned, taking with him the high priest Onias, who was also called Menelaus, as the one who had persuaded his father to force the Jews to transgress their ancestral customs and had become the cause of many evils. whom he also sent to Beroea in Syria and destroyed, ten years of the

πολλὰ ἐν τῷ στρατοπέδῳ λιπών, διὰ τῆς νυκτὸς ὁδεύσας ἐπιτίθεται τοῖς τοῦ ̓Αντιόχου περὶ τὸν ορθρον· καὶ πολλοὺς μὲν μαχόμενος ἀπέκτεινε, τοὺς δὲ λοιποὺς διώκων, ὡς ὑπὲρ τρισχιλίους πεσεῖν. καὶ μετὰ τὴν ητταν τῶν ἐναντίων ἐπανελθὼν ὁ ̓Ιούδας ἐσκύλευσε τὸ τούτων στρατόπεδον, καὶ λείαν πολλὴν πλοῦτόν τε λαβὼν αφθονον εἰς τὴν οἰκείαν ὑπέστρεψε χαίρων. τῷ δ' ἐπιόντι ἐνιαυτῷ στράτευμα πλεῖον ὁ Λυσίας ἀθροίσας ἐνέβαλεν εἰς τὴν ̓Ιουδαίαν. καὶ τοῖς προδρόμοις τούτου συμμίξας ὁ ̓Ιούδας νικᾷ. διὸ τὴν λοιπὴν δύναμιν ὁ Λυσίας ἀναλαβὼν εἰς ̓Αντιόχειαν ἐπανέζευξε, καὶ παρεσκευάζετο μετὰ μείζονος στρατιᾶς εἰς τὴν ̓Ιουδαίαν ἐμβαλεῖν. ο γε μὴν Ἰούδας εἰς ̔Ιεροσόλυμα ἀναβὰς ωστε τὸν ναὸν ἐκκαθᾶραι, καὶ ερημον αὐτὸν εὑρηκὼς καὶ εν τισι καταπεπρησμένον, ἐθρήνησε. καθάρας δὲ αὐτὸν σκεύη καινὰ εἰσεκόμισε λυχνίαν, τράπεζαν, βωμὸν χρύσεα, καὶ θυσιαστήριον καινὸν ἐκ λίθων οὐ σιδήρῳ τετμημένων ἀνῳκοδόμησεν, ἐθυμίασέ τε καὶ ὡλοκαύτωσε καὶ αρτους ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν εθηκε. γέγονε δὲ ταῦτα κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν καθ' ην ὁ ναὸς ἐμιάνθη καὶ ἡ θρησκεία ἐβεβηλώθη, τριῶν παρελθόντων ἐνιαυτῶν, κατὰ τὴν τοῦ ∆ανιὴλ πρόρρησιν πρὸ τετρακοσίων καὶ ὀκτὼ γενομένην ἐτῶν. καὶ εκτοτε ἑορτάζουσιν οἱ ̓Ιουδαῖοι τὴν ἀνάκτησιν τῆς θρησκείας, φῶτα καλοῦντες αὐτήν. τειχίσας δὲ τὴν πόλιν φύλακας ἐγκατέστησεν. ὡς δὲ τὰ πέριξ εθνη πολλοὺς τῶν ̓Ιουδαίων διέφθειρεν, ἐνεδρεύοντα διὰ βασκανίαν, πολέμοις αὐτοὺς ὁ ̓Ιούδας ἠμύνετο καὶ ἀνέστελλεν. 1.320 ̔Ο δ' ̓Αντίοχος μαθὼν πόλιν ειναι ἐν τῇ Περσίδι πλούτῳ κομῶσαν ̓Ελυμαΐδα ὠνομασμένην, καὶ ἱερὸν ̓Αρτέμιδος ἐν αὐτῇ πλῆρες ἀναθημάτων πολυτελῶν, ωρμησεν ἐπ' αὐτὴν καὶ ἐπολιόρκει. ἀποκρουσθεὶς δὲ παρὰ τῶν ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐπεξελθόντων φεύγων ηκεν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα καὶ τῆς στρατιᾶς πλείστους ἀπέβαλεν. ἀλγοῦντι δὲ διὰ τοῦτο τῷ ̓Αντιόχῳ ἀγγέλλεται ἡ τῶν στρατηγῶν ηττα ἡ ὑπὸ ̓Ιουδαίων. καὶ τοῦ ἀλγήματος προστεθέντος ἐνόσησε· καὶ γνοὺς ὡς ἀποβιώσεται τοὺς ὑπ' αὐτὸν συνεκάλεσε, καὶ πάσχειν ουτως ειπεν οτι τὸ τῶν ̓Ιουδαίων εθνος ἐκάκωσε καὶ ἐσύλησε τὸν ναόν. ταῦτα λέγων ἐξέπνευσε, Φίλιππον τῶν φίλων ενα καταλιπὼν τῆς βασιλείας ἐπίτροπον, καὶ δοὺς αὐτῷ τὸ διάδημα καὶ τὸν δακτύλιον, ινα ταῦτα κομίσῃ τῷ υἱῷ ̓Αντιόχῳ. ὁ δὲ Λυσίας θανόντα μαθὼν τὸν ̓Αντίοχον, τὸν ἐκείνου υἱὸν ἀπέδειξε βασιλέα, καλέσας Εὐπάτορα. Οἱ δ' ἐν τῇ ακρᾳ τῶν ̔Ιεροσολύμων Μακεδόνες ἐκάκουν τοὺς ̓Ιουδαίους ἀνιόντας εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν ἐπὶ τῷ θῦσαι. διὸ ἐξελεῖν εσπευδε τὴν φρουρὰν ὁ ̓Ιούδας καὶ καρτερῶς ἐπολιόρκει αὐτήν. ο μαθὼν ὁ παῖς ̓Αντίοχος ὠργίσθη, καὶ μετὰ μεγάλης δυνάμεως ἐξώρμησε κατὰ τῆς ̓Ιουδαίας καὶ ̔Ιερουσαλήμ. Ἰούδας δὲἀπαντήσας αὐτῷ τῶν προδρόμων περὶ ἑξακοσίους ἀναιρεῖ. καὶ ̓Ελεάζαρ ὁ τοῦ ̓Ιούδα ὁμαίμων ὁ καὶ Αυραν καλούμενος, τῶν ἐλεφάντων τὸν ὑψηλότατον ἰδὼν ὡπλισμένον θώραξι βασιλικοῖς, καὶ οἰηθεὶς αὐτῷ ἐποχεῖσθαι τὸν βασιλέα, μετὰ σφοδρᾶς ὁρμῆς ἐπῆλθεν αὐτῷ, καὶ ὑπὸ τὴν γαστέρα τοῦ θηρίου γενόμενος επληξεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν. ὁ δ' ἐπικα1.321 τασεισθεὶς τῷ ̓Ελεαζάρῳ καὶ πιέσας αὐτὸν τῷ βάρει τοῦ σώματος εφθειρεν. ὁρῶν δὲ τὴν τῶν πολεμίων ἰσχὺν ὁ ̓Ιούδας εἰς ̔Ιεροσόλυμα ἐπανῆλθε καὶ πρὸς πολιορκίαν παρεσκευάζετο. ̓Αντίοχος δὲ εἰς ̔Ιεροσόλυμα ἐλθὼν ἐπολιόρκει τὸ ἱερόν, καρτερῶς τῶν ενδον ἀμυνομένων, ἀλλὰ τροφῆς ἐπιλιπούσης αὐτοῖς πολλοὶ ἀπεδίδρασκον. τοῦ μέντοι Φιλίππου, ον ἐπίτροπον τῆς βασιλείας θνήσκων ὁ ̓Αντίοχος ειασε, σφετεριζομένου τὴν βασιλείαν, Λυσίας ὁ στρατηγὸς καὶ ̓Αντίοχος γνόντες τοῦτο τοῖς πολιορκουμένοις ἐσπείσαντο ωστε αὐτοὺς τοῖς πατρῴοις κεχρῆσθαι νόμοις. εἰσδεχθεὶς ουν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ̓Αντίοχος καὶ ἰδὼν τὸν ναὸν ὀχυρώτατον, τοὺς ορκους ἠθέτησε καὶ τὸ τεῖχος κατέσκαψε· καὶ ουτως ὑπέστρεψε, καὶ τὸν ἀρχιερέα ̓Ονίαν ἐπαγόμενος, ος καὶ Μενέλαος ἐκαλεῖτο, ὡς πείσαντα τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ τοὺς ̓Ιουδαίους βιάζεσθαι παραβῆναι τὰ εθη τὰ πάτρια καὶ πολλῶν κακῶν γενόμενον αιτιον. ον καὶ πέμψας εἰς Βέρροιαν τῆς Συρίας διέφθειρεν, ετη δέκα τῆς
