Isocr. Reproach no one for a misfortune; for fortune is common to all, and the future is unseen.
Consider nothing in human affairs to be certain. For in this way you will neither be overjoyed when fortunate, nor overly sorrowful when unfortunate.
Even a good helmsman is sometimes shipwrecked; and a worthy man is unfortunate.
Democrit. The one who succeeds with a son-in-law, has found (833) a son; but the one who fails, has lost a daughter as well.
Socrat. It is good for the fire to appear bright on the hearth; but in misfortune, the mind.
Socrates. The intemperate in their illnesses, and the foolish in their good fortunes are difficult to cure.
The same, when asked, What grieves the good? said, The good fortune of the wicked; for irrational prosperity is accustomed to call forth deeds of insolence.
He whom fortune abuses finds scourges even from the gentle.
Demonact. Neither can the unmusical with instruments, nor the uneducated with fortunes bring themselves into harmony.
Defeat reveals the truly brave man; and misfortune, the prudent man.
From Favorinus. When fortunate, be not arrogant; when in want, do not be humbled; know how to bear the changes of fortune nobly.
Alexandr. Alexander the king, seeing Diogenes sleeping in a jar, said: O jar full of sense! But the philosopher, standing up, said: O greatest king.
I want a drop of fortune, rather than a jar of sense, For without it, sense is unfortunate. To which one of the well-disposed replied, A sprinkle of sense for me rather, than an abyss of fortune, For without it, sense is unfortunate.
Of Epicurus. The base soul, by prosperity is made vain; but by misfortunes
is cast down.
Demosth. He said that one who is unwilling to bear misfortune nobly cannot bear good fortune either.
Of Cypselus. Corinth. When fortunate, be moderate; but when unfortunate, be prudent.
From Epictetus and Isocrat. The educated, just like those from the wrestling school, even if they should fall, quickly and skillfully rise up from misfortune.
One must call upon reason, like a good physician, as a helper in misfortune.
A foolish man, having enjoyed too much good fortune as if it were drunkenness, becomes more foolish.
Envy is the rival of the fortunate.
He who remembers what a human being is, will be vexed at none of the things that happen.

∆ημοκρίτ. Γαμβρόν ὁ μέν ἐπιτυχών, εὗρεν (833) υἱόν· ὁ δέ ἀποτυχών, ἀπώλεσε καί θυγατέρα.
Σωκράτ. Καλόν μέν ἐπί τῆς ἑστίας φαίνεσθαι τό πῦρ λαμπρόν· ἐπί δέ τῆς ἀτυχίας, τόν νοῦν.
Σωκράτης. Οἱ μέν ἀκρατεῖς ἐν ταῖς ἀῤῥωστίαις, οἱ δέ ἄφρονες ἐν ταῖς εὐτυχίαις εἰσί συσθεράπευτοι.
Ὁ αὐτός ἐρωτηθείς, Τί λυπεῖ τούς ἀγαθούς; ἔφη, Εὐτυχία πονηρῶν· φιλεῖ γάρ εὐημερία παράλογος, ὕβρεως ἔργα προκαλεῖσθαι.
Ὅν ἡ τύχη προπηλακίζει, καί παρά τῶν πράων οὕτως μάστιγας εὑρίσκει.
∆ημώνακτ. Οὔτε οἱ ἄμουσοι τοῖς ὀργάνοις, οὔτε οἱ ἀπαίδευτοι ταῖς τύχαις δύνανται συναρμόσασθαι.
∆είκνυσιν ἡ μέν τροπή, τόν κατά ἀλήθειαν ἀνδρεῖον· ἡ δέ ἀτυχία, τόν φρόνιμον.
Ἐκ τῶν Φαυωρίνου. Εὐτυχών μή ἔσο ὑπερήφανος· ἀπορήσας, μή ταπεινοῦ· τάς μεταβολάς τῆς τύχης γενναίως ἐπίστασο φέρειν.
Ἀλέξανδρ. Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ βασιλεύς ἰδών ∆ιογένην κοιμώμενον ἐν πίθῳ, ἔφη· Ὦ πίθε μεστέ φρενῶν· ὁ δέ φιλόσοφος ἀναστάς, ἔφη · Ὦ βασιλεῦ μέγιστε.
Θέλω τύχης σταλαγμόν, ἤ φρενῶν πίθον, Ἧς μή παρούσης δυστυχοῦσιν αἱ φρένες. Πρός ὅν τις ἀντέφησε τῶν φιλοφρόνων, Ῥανίς φρενῶν μοι μᾶλλον, ἤ βυθός τύχης, Ἧς μή παρούσης δυστυχοῦσιν αἱ φρένες.
Ἐπικούρου. Ἡ ταπεινή ψυχή, τοῖς μέν εὐημερήμασιν ἐχαυνώθη· ταῖς δέ συμφοραῖς
καθηρέθη.
∆ημοσθ. Τόν μή βουλόμενον γενναίως φέρειν ἀτυχίαν, μηδ᾿ εὐτυχίαν ἔφη δύνασθαι.
Κυψέλου. Κορινθ. Εὐτυχών μέτριος ἴσθι· ἀτυχών δέ, φρόνιμος.
Ἐκ τοῦ Ἐπικτήτου καί Ἰσοκράτ. Οἱ πεπαιδευμένοι καθάπερ οἱ ἐκ παλαίστρας, κἄν πέσωσι, ταχέως καί ἐπιδεξίως ἐκ τῆς ἀτυχίας ἐξανίστανται.
Τόν λογισμόν ὥσπερ ἰατρόν ἀγαθόν, ἐπικαλεῖσθαι δεῖ ἐν ἀτυχίᾳ βοηθόν.
Εὐτυχίας ὥσπερ μέθης ἄφρων ἐπί πλεῖον ἀπολαύσας, ἀνοητότερος γίνεται.
Τῶν εὐτυχούντων ἀνταγωνιστής ὁ φθόνος.
Ὁ μεμνημένος τί ἐστιν ἄνθρωπος, ἐπ᾿ οὐδενί τῶν συμβάντων δυσχερανεῖ.
