with properties; but according to the Fathers, the particular man, personally distinguished from other men.
Of Saint Irenaeus, bishop of Lugdunum, disciple of Saint John the apostle and evangelist, from the discourses to Demetrius, deacon of Vienna, concerning faith; of which the beginning is, "Seeking God, hear David saying."
The will and energy of God is the creative and providential cause of all time and place and age, and of every nature. The will of the intelligent soul is the reason within us, as it is its self-determining power. Will is an appetitive mind and an intellectual appetite inclining toward that which is willed.
Of Clement the Stromatist, from his discourse On Providence. Will is a natural power, appetitive of that which is according to nature. Will is a natural
appetite, suitable to a rational nature. Will is a natural, self-determining movement of a sovereign mind; or a mind moving freely with respect to something. Self-determination is a mind moved according to nature; or a sovereign, intelligent movement of the soul.
(277) Of Saint Alexander, Pope of Alexandria, from the Epistle to Aeglon, Bishop of Cynopolis, against the Arians.
Will is a natural, free power of every intelligent being, as having nothing involuntary according to its substance.
Of Saint Eustathius, Patriarch of Antioch, from his discourse On the Soul. Will is a natural movement of the reason within us. Will is a rational and
vital appetite.
Of Saint Athanasius, Pope of Alexandria, from his major discourse On Faith. Will is a self-determining movement of the intelligent soul. The first property of the intelligent soul,
and indicative of its essence, is the will. The mind of the Lord is not yet Lord, but either will, or counsel, or energy.
Of Saint Gregory, Bishop of Nyssa, from his discourse Against Apollinarius. Will is a certain mind, and a disposition regarding something. Self-determination is a sovereign
movement of the will. The will of the intelligent soul is its ability to choose according to its judgment, through the faculty of choice. The will of every rational nature is its life according to nature. The deprivation of such life is the annihilation of its substance.
Of Saint Diadochus, Bishop of Photice, from the sixth chapter of the Ascetical Treatises. Self-determination is the will of a rational soul, proceeding unhindered toward that which
it wishes.
