Of Hyperides. Men abstain from wrongdoings for two reasons, either through fear, or through shame.
Socrat. What you are angered by suffering from others, do not do to others. Of Epictetus. Just as a straight scale is neither corrected by a true scale, nor under
is it judged by a false one; so also the just judge is neither corrected by the just, nor is he judged by the unjust.
Do not judge in another's court before you yourself have been judged by justice.
Of Pythagoras. The wrongdoer suffers greater evils through his conscience, being tormented, than he who is by the
body and scourged with blows. Of Zeno. Zeno the Stoic philosopher, being asked by one of his acquaintances, how we might
do none of the unjust things, said: If you always suppose me to be present with you.
The same, being asked if a man doing wrong can escape God's notice, "But not even in his thoughts," he said.
Socrates. Having been condemned by the Athenians to be thrown from a cliff, his wife Xanthippe weeping and saying: "O Socrates, how unjustly you are dying!" he said: "Would you then have wished me to die justly?"
Of Menander. Suspect nothing evil from a good man. A just character does not know how to do wrong. Socrates to Xenophon. Does not the deed seem to you a more valuable proof than the word?
"Much more, by Zeus," he said. For many say just things, but do unjust ones; but of those who practice justice, not even one could be unjust.
DISCOURSE 66.
Concerning friends and brotherly love. 1 Cor. 13. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not
love, I have become (756) a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And after a little: If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body that I shall be burned, but have not love, I am nothing.
Prov. 27. The wounds of a friend are more trustworthy than the voluntary kisses of an enemy.
Prov. 29. He who prepares a net before the face of his friend, will cast it about his own feet.
Prov. 18. A man desiring to be separated from friends makes excuses.
Prov. 15. Better is a dish of vegetables with friendship and grace, than a serving of calves with enmity.
Sirach 22. One who throws a stone at birds, scares them away; and one who reproaches a friend, dissolves a friendship.
Sirach 6. A faithful friend is a strong shelter; and he who has found one, has found a treasure.
Sirach 9. Do not forsake an old friend; for the new one is not equal to him.

Σωκράτης. Καταδικασθείς ὑπό Ἀθηναίων κατακρημνισθῆναι, τῆς γυναικός Ξανθίππης κλαιούσης, καί λεγούσης· Ὦ Σώκρατες, ὡς ἀδίκως ἀποθνήσκεις! ἔφη· Σύ οὖν ἐβούλου με δικαίως ἀποθανεῖν;
Μενάνδρου. Χρηστοῦ πρός ἀνδρός μηδέν ὑπονόει κακόν. ∆ίκαιος ἀδικεῖν οὐκ ἐπίσταται τρόπος. Ξενοφῶντι Σωκράτης. Ἦ οὐ δοκεῖ σοι ἀξιοτεκμαρτότερον τοῦ λόγου τό ἔργον εἶναι;
Πολύ γε, νή ∆ία, ἔφη. ∆ίκαια μέν λέγοντες πολλοί, ἄδικα ποιοῦσι· δίκαια δέ πραττόντων, οὐδ᾿ ἄν εἷς ἄδικος εἴη.

Σιράχ στ´. Φίλος πιστός σκέπη κραταιά· ὁ δέ εὑρών αὐτόν, εὗρε θησαυρόν.
