Stilpo. Stilpo the Megarian philosopher, when his fatherland was captured and plundered by Demetrius the tyrant, being brought before the king, and asked if he himself had lost anything, said, "Nothing of mine; for I have my reason and my education. But as for the rest, why are they mine rather than the besiegers'?"
The same man, being asked when his city was being plundered by Demetrius, "Stilpo, is anything of yours being taken away?" said, "Nothing."
"For they never drove off my cattle, nor my horses;" and besides, I saw no soldier carrying off virtue on his shoulders
Lasus. Lasus of Hermione, being asked by someone what was wisest, said, "Experience."
The same man, when an untalented painter said to him, "Plaster your house, so that I may paint it," he said, "Certainly not, but first paint it, so that afterwards I may plaster it."
Protag. Protagoras used to say that there is neither art without practice, nor practice without art.
Epicur. One must not pretend to philosophize, but to philosophize in reality. For we do not need the appearance of being healthy, but to be healthy in truth.
Demonact. The same man being asked, who had been his teacher, said, "The platform of the Athenians," indicating that experience through deeds is better than any sophistic teaching.

Concerning good fortune and misfortune. Luke 16. You received your good things in your lifetime, and Lazarus likewise the bad things;
but now, he is comforted, and you are in anguish.
Corinthians 4. To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and are poorly clothed, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling place; working with our own hands.
Sirach 12. In a man's prosperity, his enemies are in sorrow, and in his adversity even a friend will be separated.
Sirach 18. Remember a time of famine in a time of plenty; poverty and need in a day of wealth. From morning until evening the time changes.
Sirach 9. Do not be jealous of the glory of sinners.

As that which bears you bears its bearing, so bear it; but if you disobey,
You will both harm yourself, and that which bears you must still be borne.

Ὁ αὐτός, ἀφυοῦς ζωγράφου λέγοντος αὐτῷ, Κονίασόν σου τήν οἰκίαν, ἵνα αὐτήν ζωγραφήσω, ἔφη, Οὔμενουν, ἀλλά πρότερον αὐτήν ζωγράφησον, ἵνα μετά ταῦτα ἐγώ αὐτήν κονιάσω.
Προταγ. Προταγόρας ἔλεγε, μηδέν εἶναι , μήτε τέχνην ἄνευ μελέτης, μήτε μελέτην ἄνευ τέχνης.
Ἐπικούρ. Οὐ προσποιεῖσθαι δεῖ φιλοσοφεῖν, ἀλλ᾿ ὄντως φιλοσοφεῖν. Οὐ γάρ προσδεόμεθα τοῦ δοκεῖν ὑγιαίνειν, ἀλλά τοῦ κατ᾿ ἀλήθειαν ὑγιαίνειν.
∆ημώνακτ. Ὁ αὐτός ἐφωτηθείς, τίς αὐτοῦ διδάσκαλος γεγονώς εἴη, Τό τῶν Ἀθηναίων, ἔφη, βῆμα, ἐμφαίνων ὅτι ἡ διά τῶν πραγμάτων ἐμπειρία, κρείττων πάσης σοφιστικῆς διδασκαλίας ἐστίν.

Περί εὐτυχίας καί δυστυχίας. Λουκ. στς´. Ἀπέλαβες σύ τά ἀγαθά σου ἐν τῇ ζωῇ σου, καί Λάζαρος ὁμοίως τά κακά·
νῦν δέ, ὅδε παρακαλεῖται, σύ δέ ὀδυνᾶσαι.
Κορινθ. δ´. Ἄχρι τῆς ἄρτι ὥρας καί πεινῶμεν καί διψῶμεν καί γυμνητεύομεν, καί κολαφιζόμεθα, καί ἀστατοῦμεν ἐργαζόμενοι ταῖς ἰδίαις χερσίν.
Σιράχ ιβ. Ἐν ἀγαθοῖς ἀνδρός, οἱ ἐχθροί αὐτοῦ ἐν λύπῃ, καί ἐν κακίᾳ αὐτοῦ καί ὁ φίλος διαχωρισθήσεται.
Σιράχ ιη´. Μνήσθητι καιρόν λιμοῦ ἐν καιρῷ πλησμονῆς· πτωχείαν καί ἔνδειαν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ πλούτου. Ἀπό πρωΐ ἕως ἑσπέρας μεταβάλλει ὁ καιρός.
Σιράχ θ´. Μή ζηλώσῃς δόξαν ἁμαρτωλῶν.
Ἐξ Ἐπιγρ.
Ὥς κε [ὡς δέ] φέρει τό φέρων σε φέρειν, φέρου· εἰ δ᾿ ἀπειθήσεις,
Καί σαυτόν βλάψεις, καί τό φέρον σε φέρειν.
