Socrates. When his wife complained to him that he did not accept his son, since he was useless, and said that he was from him, he spat and "This too," he said, "is from me, but it is not useful."

Of Melesias. Whatever contributions you bring to your parents, expect the same from your children in your old age.

Euripides. Whoever honors his parents in life, this man is a friend of God both living and dead. There is no finer prize for children than this, to be born of a noble and good father, and to give due honor to one's parents.

Of Solon. Solon, when asked why he did not set a penalty against those who strike their fathers, said, "Because I did not suppose that any such persons would exist."

Of Plato. Plato, seeing someone being insolent toward his own father, said, "Will you not cease, young man, despising him, because of whom you deem yourself worthy to be proud?"

From the history of Aelian. In the eighty-first Olympiad, they say that Aetna erupted, at which time Philonomus and Callias of Catana, taking up their fathers, carried them through the midst of the flame, having scorned their other possessions; for which things they also received a reward from the divine. For the fire (861) parted as they ran, in that place where they came to be.

From the Encheiridion of Epictetus and Isocrates. Be eager to leave your sons educated rather than rich.

A daughter is another's property to her father.

The same man advised that one ought to leave reverence to children, rather than gold.

The insolence of a father is a sweet medicine; for the beneficial part is greater than the stinging part.

Do not smile upon a son and daughter, lest you weep later.

DISCOURSE 24.

Concerning fear. Matt. 26. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Acts 10. Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons, but in every nation he that fears him, and works righteousness, is accepted with him.

Prov. 14. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life; and it causes one to turn away from the snare of death.

Solomon 12. The end of the matter, hear the whole: Fear God, and keep his commandments, for this is the whole man.

Sirach 40. Riches and strength lift up the heart; and above them both is the fear of the Lord.

Εὐριπίδ. Ὅστις δέ τούς τεκόντας ἐν βίῳ σέβει, Ὄδ᾿ ἐστί καί ζῶν καί θανών Θεοῦ φίλος. Οὐκ ἔστι παισί τούτου κάλλιον γέρας, Ἤ πατρός ἐσθλοῦ κἀγαθοῦ πεφυκέναι, Καί τοῖς τεκοῦσιν ἀξίαν τιμήν νέμειν.

Σόλωνος. Σόλων ἐφωτηθείς, διατί κατά τῶν τυπτόντων τούς πατέρας ἐπιτίμιον οὐχ

ὥρισεν, εἶπεν, ὅτι Οὐχ ὑπέλαβον τοιούτους τινάς ἔσεσθαι.

Πλάτωνος. Πλάτων θρασυνόμενον ἰδών ινα πρός τόν ἑαυτοῦ πατέρα, Οὐ παύσῃ, μειράκιον, εἶπε, τούτου καταφρονεῖν, δι᾿ ὅν μέγα φρονεῖν ἀξιοῖς;

Ἐκ τῆς Αἰλιανοῦ ἱστορίας. Θυγάτηρ ἀλλότριον κτῆμα ὑπάρχει τῷ πατρί.

Ὁ αὐτός τοῖς παισί συνεβούλευσεν αἰδώ δεῖν καταλιπεῖν , ἤ χρυσόν.

Πατρός ὕβρις, ἡδύ φάρμακον· πλέον γάρ ἔχει τό ὠφελοῦν τοῦ δάκνοντος.

Υἱῷ καί θυγατρί μή προσμειδιάσῃς, να μή ὕστερον δακρύσῃς.

Περί φόβου. Ματθ. κς´. Τό μέν πνεῦμα πρόθυμον· ἡ δέ σάρξ ἀσθενής.

Πράξ. ι´. Ἐπ᾿ ἀληθείας καταλαμβάνω, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστι προσωπολήπτης ὁ Θεός, ἀλλ᾿ ἐν παντί ἔθνει ὁ φοβούμενος αὐτόν καί ἐργαζόμενος δικαιοσύνην, δεκτός αὐτῷ ἐστιν.

Παροιμ. ιδ΄ . Φόβος Κυρίου πηγή ζωῆς· ποιεῖ δέ ἀκκλίνειν ἐκ παγίδος θανάτου.

Σολομ. ιβ´. Τέλος λόγου, τό πᾶν ἄκουε, τόν Θεόν φοβοῦ, καί τάς ἐντολάς αὐτοῦ φύλασσε, ὅτι τοῦτο πᾶς ἄνθρωπος.

Σιράχ μ´. Χρήματα καί ἰσχύς ἀνυψοῦσι καρδίαν· καί ὑπέρ ἀμφότερα φόβος Κυρίου.
