Charikl. For the speech's haste toward what has not yet been said, takes away from the entirety of what has already been said.
Of Leukippe. For the fear of danger troubled the hopes of the soul; but the hope of succeeding covered the fear with pleasure; thus, while hoping it was afraid, and while grieving it rejoiced.
DISCOURSE 39.
Concerning women. John 4. Jesus says to her: I who speak to you am he. And upon this came his
disciples, and they marveled that he was talking with a woman.
1 Tim. 2. Let a woman learn in quietness with all submissiveness. But I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man.
Prov. 5. Pay no attention to a worthless woman; for honey drips from the lips of a harlot, which for a time moistens your throat; but later you will find it more bitter than gall.
Prov. 25. Just as a worm in wood, so an evil-doing woman destroys a man.
Prov. 21. It is better to live in a desert, than with a quarrelsome and talkative and angry woman.
Sir. 25. You would be pleased to dwell with a lion and a dragon, rather than to dwell with a wicked woman.
(912) Basil. The wicked dispositions of women, submerge the weak souls of those who live with them.
Of the Theologian. The most foolish of women, lacking their own beauty, flee to colors; and they are, as I might say, decorously making a spectacle of themselves, through decorum undecorous, and through shame more shameful.
Chrysost. He who has a wicked woman, let him know that he has already received the wages of his iniquities.
It is a terrible thing to take a poorer woman, a terrible thing a richer one. For the one has harmed his substance, the other, the authority and freedom of the man.
Clement. It shows a woman to be free from suspicion of slander, not to be beautified, nor indeed to be adorned, beyond what is fitting.
Of Sextus. A seal is good upon a wicked woman. Democrit. To be ruled by a woman would be the ultimate outrage. Of Solon. Solon, when asked by someone if he should marry, said: If you marry an ugly one, you will have
a punishment; but if a beautiful one, you will have her in common.
Diogenes. Seeing women conversing together, he said, An asp is borrowing poison from a viper.

μαθηταί αὐτοῦ, καί ἐθαύμασαν ὅτι μετά γυναικός ἐλάλει.
Α´ Τιμ. β´. Γυνή ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ μανθανέτω ἐν πάσῃ ὑποταγῇ· γυναικί δέ διδάσκειν οὐκ ἐπιτρέπω, οὐδέ αὐθεντεῖν ἀνδρός.
Παροιμ. ε´. Μή πρόσεχε φαύλῃ γυναικί· μέλι γάρ ἀποστάζει ἀπό χειλέων γυναικός πόρνης, ἤ πρός καιρόν λιπαίνει σοι φάρυγγα· ὕστερον μέντοι πικρότερον χολῆς εὑρήσεις.
Παροιμ. κε΄ . Ὥσπερ σκώληξ ἐν ξύλῳ, οὕτως ἄνδρα ἀπόλλυσι γυνή κακοποιός.
Παροιμ. κα´. Κρεῖσσον οἰκεῖν ἐν ἐρήμῳ, ἤ μετά γυναικός μαχίμου καί γλωσσώδους καί ὀργίλου.
Σιρ. κε´. Συνοικῆσαι λέοντι καί δράκοντι εὐδόκησαι, ἤ συνοικῆσαι μετά γυναικός πονηρᾶς.
(912) Βασιλ. Αἰ πονηραί τῶν γυναικῶν διαθέσεις, τάς ἀσθενεῖς ψυχάς τῶν συνοικούντων καταβαπτίζουσιν.
Θεολόγου. Αἱ τῶν γυναικῶν ἀφρονέσταται, ἀποροῦσαι κάλλους οἰκείου, πρός τά χρώματα φεύγουσι· καί εἰσίν, ὡς ἄν εἴποιμι, κοσμίως θεατριζόμεναι, δι᾿ εὐσχημοσύνην ἀσχήμονες, καί δι᾿ αἶσχος αἰσχρότεραι.
Χρυσοστ. Ὁ ἔχων γυναῖκα πονηράν, γινωσκέτω ὅτι ἤδη τούς μισθούς τῶν ἀνομιῶν αὐτοῦ ἐκομίσατο.
∆εινόν πενιχροτέραν λαβεῖν γυναῖκα, δεινόν εὐπορωτέραν. Τό μέν γάρ εἰς τήν οὐσίαν ἔβλαψε, τό δέ, εἰς αὐθεντίαν καί ἐλευθερίαν, τόν ἄνδρα.
Κλήμεντ. Ἀνύποπτον εἰς διαβολήν δείκνυσι γυναῖκα, τό μή καλλωπίζεσθαι, μηδέ μήν κοσμεῖσθαι, παρά τοῦ πρέποντος.
Σέξτου. Ἐπί γυναικί πονηρᾷ καλόν σφραγίς. ∆ημοκρίτ. Ὑπό γυναικός ἄρχεσθαι, ὕβρις ἄν εἴη ἔσχατα. Σόλωνος. Σόλων ἐρωτηθείς ὑπό τινος, εἰ γήμῃ, ἔφη· Ἐάν μέν αἰσχράν γήμῃς, ἕξεις
ποινήν· εἰ δ᾿ ὡραίαν, ἕξεις κοινήν.
∆ιογένης. Κοινολογουμένας γυναῖκας θεασάμενος, ἔφη, Ἀσπίς παρ᾿ ἐχίδνης φάρμακον δανείζεται.
