Neither is it safe for sailors to anchor in an inappropriate place, nor is it without danger for the living to conduct their lives against the law.
Keep the laws, and cast out fears; For every keeper of the law is outside of fear. There are two things that guide us: nature and law; but nature prevails over the law. Chrysostom. The laws also know to forgive sins of necessity. The kinds of laws are three: the law of nature, the law of the letter, the one given to Moses, the law of grace.
(977) Of Zaleucus. Zaleucus, the lawgiver of the Locrians, said that the laws are like spiderwebs. For if a fly or gnat should fall into them, it is held fast; but if a wasp or a bee, it breaks through and departs. If a poor man falls into the laws, he is held fast; but if a rich man or one powerful in speech, breaking through he runs off.
Solon. Solon, having been asked by someone how cities are best governed, said: If the citizens obey the rulers, and the rulers obey the laws.
Of Demades. For slaves, necessity is law; but for free men, the law is necessity.
Of Epictetus. Law wishes to benefit the life of men; but it cannot. To those who obey, it demonstrates its own virtue.
Just as doctors are saviors to the sick, so also are the laws to those who are wronged.
The truest laws are the most just. It is proper to yield to the law, to the ruler, and to the wiser one. Things done against the law are as if they were not done. Demosth. Demosthenes the orator said that the laws are the soul of the city. For just as a body deprived of soul falls, so also a city, when laws are not present, is destroyed.
Of Cyrus. The same man, having been asked, "Whom do you consider to be unjust?" "Those," he said, "who do not use the law."
Theophrastus. The good are in need of few laws; for affairs are not for the laws, but the laws are made for affairs.
Anonymous. The best democracy is that in which all fear the law as a tyrant.
Arcesilaus. Arcesilaus used to say: Just as where there are many medicines and many doctors, there are the most illnesses; so also indeed where there are the most laws, there is also the greatest injustice.

Σόλων. Σόλων ἐρωτηθείς ὑπό τινος, πῶς ἄριστα αἱ πόλεις οἰκοῦνται, ἔφη· Ἐάν μέν οἱ πολῖται τοῖς ἄρχουσι πείθωνται, οἱ δέ ἄρχοντες τοῖς νόμοις.
∆ημάδους. Τοῖς μέν δούλοις, ἡ ἀνάγκη νόμος· τοῖς δέ ἐλευθέροις, ὁ νόμος ἀνάγκη.
Ἐπικτήτου. Νόμος βούλεται μέν εὐεργετεῖν βίον ἀνθρώπων· οὐ δύναται δέ τοῖς πειθομένοις ἐνδείκνυται τήν ἰδίαν ἀρετήν.
Ὥσπερ τοῖς νοσοῦσιν ἰατροί σωτῆρες, οὕτω καί τοῖς ἀδικουμένοις οἱ νόμοι.
Νόμοι ἀληθέστατοι οἱ δικαιότατοι. Νόμῳ καί ἄρχοντι καί τῷ σοφωτέρῳ εἴκειν κόσμιον. Τά παρά νόμον γινόμενα, ἀντί μή γινομένων εἰσίν. ∆ημοσθ. ∆ημοσθένης ὁ ῥήτωρ ἔφη, πόλεως εἶναι τήν ψυχήν, τούς νόμους. Ὥσπερ
γάρ σῶμα στερηθέν ψυχῆς πίπτει, οὕτω καί πόλις, μή ὄντων νόμων καταλύεται.
Κύρου. Ὁ αὐτός ἐρωτηθείς, Τίνας ἀδίκους νομίζεις εἶναι; Τούς μή χρωμένους, εἶπε, τῷ νόμῳ.
Θεοφράστ. Ὀλίγων οἱ ἀγαθοί νόμων δέονται· οὐ γάρ τά πράγματα πρός τούς νόμους, ἀλλ᾿ οἱ νόμοι πρός τά πράγματα τίθενται.
Ἀνωνύμου. Κρατίστην εἶναι δημοκρατίαν, ἐν ᾗ οἱ πάντες ὡς τύραννον φοβοῦνται τόν νόμον.
Ἀρκεσίλαος. Ἀρκεσίλαος ἔλεγεν· Ὥσπερ ὅπου φάρμακα πολλά καί ἰατροί πολλοί, ἐνταῦθα νόσοι πλεῖσται· οὕτω δή καί ὅπου νόμοι πλεῖστοι, ἐκεῖ εἶναι καί ἀδικίαν μεγίστην.
