Solon.Solon the wise said that city is best governed in which the good happen to be honored; and worst governed, in which the evil are.
Sextus. Two motives move a man to the care of God: punishment for impiety, and rewards for a pious mind.
Evil becomes unbearable when it is praised. Procopius the rhetorician. When virtue is not honored, vice speaks boldly. (1012) Philo. If you wish to be doubly esteemed, both honor those who do best,
and censure those who do worse. Socrates. When asked which city is best governed, he said, The one living with law, and against those
who do wrong, prosecuting.
DISCOURSE 69.
On self-love. John 12. He who loves his life will lose it; and he who hates it in this
world will keep it for eternal life. 2 Corinthians 10. For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord
commends. Philippians 2. For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ. Sirach 37. My son, prove your soul in your life, and see what is evil for it,
and do not give it to it; for not all things are profitable for all. Proverbs 21. Every man seems righteous to himself; but the Lord directs the hearts. Proverbs 27. Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own
lips. Basil. For it is a reproach to a man, at least to one truly worthy of this name,
to be a beautifier and a lover of the body, or to be ignobly disposed toward any other of the passions. For to devote all one's effort to how his body might be most beautiful,is characteristic of one who does not know himself, nor understands the wise commandment.
Chrysostom. No one is a friend, no one a brother. We each look to our own things. For this reason we also diminish our own things, and are weak and easily overcome by both men and the devil, from not shielding one another. For indeed in war and battle, the soldier who looks only to this, how he might save himself by fleeing, also destroys the others with himself; just as the noble man, who takes up arms for the others, saves himself along with the others.
He who does not accept the care offered to him by his brother, is also inharmonious with himself.
The Theologian. All are pious from one thing, from condemning one another's impiety; mild judges of their own affairs, but exact examiners of others'.
Let us be of one mind with each other spiritually; let us become lovers of our brothers rather than lovers of ourselves. Philo. Those who do all things for their own sake only, self-love, the greatest evil
practice. Critias. It is terrible when someone who is not wise seems to be wise. But we are good at seeing evil in others;

Χρυσοστ. Οὐδείς φίλος, οὐδείς ἀδελφός. Τά ἑαυτῶν σκοποῦμεν ἕκαστος. ∆ιά τοῦτο καί τά ἑαυτῶν κολοβοῦμεν, καί ἀσθενεῖς καί εὐκαταγώνιστοι καί ἀνθρώποις καί διαβόλῳ ἐσμέν, ἐκ τοῦ μή συνασπίζειν ἀλλήλους. Καί γάρ ἐν πολέμῳ καί παρατάξει, ὁ πρός τοῦτο μόνον ὁρῶν στρατιώτης, ὅπως ἑαυτόν διασώσῃ φυγών, καί τούς ἄλλους μεθ᾿ ἑαυτοῦ συναπόλλυσιν· ὥσπερ οὖν ὁ γενναῖος, καί ὑπέρ τῶν ἄλλων τά ὅπλα τιθέμενος, μετά τῶν ἄλλων καί ἑαυτόν διασώζει.
Ὁ μή καταδεχόμενος τήν παρά τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ θεραπείαν προσαγομένην αὐτῷ, ἀσύμφωνός ἐστι καί αὐτός ἑαυτῷ.
Θεολόγου. Πάντες μέν εὐσεβεῖς ἐξ ἑνός τοῦ καταγινώσκειν ἀλλήλων ἀσέβειαν· τῶν μέν ἰδίων πρᾶοι κριταί, τῶν δέ ἀλλοτρίων ἀκριβεῖς ἐξετασταί.
Συνῶμεν ἀλλήλοις πνευματικῶς· γενώμεθα φιλάδελφοι μᾶλλον ἤ φίλαυτοι. Φίλων. Οἱ ἑαυτῶν μόνον ἕνεκα πάντα πράττοντες, φιλαυτίας μέγιστον κακόν
