The Father is full God in himself; the Son, full God, begotten from the Father;
the Holy Spirit, full God, proceeding from the Father and the Son. And the Spirit, indeed, proceeds from the Son immediately; but from the Father, through the mediation of the Son. And that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Son, this the Son has from the Father. For this reason, whoever believes that the Holy Spirit does not proceed from the Son, is on the path of perdition. Whence Saint Athanasius, when he was in exile in the western parts, in the exposition of the faith which he clarified in Latin words, thus spoke: "The Father is made of none, neither created, nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone, not made, nor created, but begotten. The Holy Spirit is from the Father and the Son, not made, nor created, [nor begotten] but proceeding." And the same Saint Athanasius, in the exposition of the faith, which he explained in Greek words, word for word thus spoke: "But the Holy Spirit, being the procession of the Father and of the Son who bears it, through whom he filled all things." Whence also the blessed Gregory, who is rightly called the Wonderworker, bishop of Neocaesarea, in the exposition of the faith, which he received through a revelation from the blessed John the evangelist, through the mediation of the God-bearer, most clearly thus proclaimed, saying: "One God, Father of the living Word, of subsistent Wisdom and Power and eternal Character; perfect begetter of the perfect; Father of the only-begotten Son. One Lord, alone from alone, God from God, character and image of the Godhead, active Word," and the rest. But he who speaks about the Son says, that He is alone from alone, therefore not the Holy Spirit from alone; therefore from the Father and another, since He is from someone. But when we say, from the Father and another, we do not say from another according to substance, but according to hypostasis.
And that the Holy Spirit is from the Son immediately, but from the Father through the mediation of the Son, the blessed Gregory of Nyssa testifies, saying thus: "Confessing the unchangeableness of the nature, we do not deny the difference according to cause and effect; by which alone we apprehend one to be distinguished from the other; believing one to be the cause, and the other, from the cause. And of that which is from the cause we again conceive another difference, that the one, is immediately from the first, or only to the Son, or only to the

Συγγραφεῖσα καί ἀποσταλεῖσα παρά Γρηγορίου ΠάπαῬώμης, πρός Γερμανόν τόν ἁγιώτατον πατριάρχην Κωνσταντινουπόλεως.
Πατήρ ἐστί πλήρης Θεός ἐν ἑαυτῷ· ὁ Υἱός, πλήρης Θεός, ἀπό τοῦ Πατρός γεννητός·
τό Πνεῦμα τό ἅγιον, πλήρης Θεός, ἀπό τοῦ Πατρός καί τοῦ Υἱοῦ ἐκπορευόμενον. Καί τό Πνεῦμα μέν, ἀπό τοῦ Υἱοῦ ἐκπορεύεται ἀμέσως· ἀπό τοῦ Πατρός δέ, μεσιτεύοντος τοῦ Υἱοῦ. Τό δέ, ὅτι τό Πνεῦμα τό ἅγιον ἐκπορεύεται ἀπό τοῦ Υἱοῦ, τοῦτο ἔχει ὁ Υἱός ἀπό τοῦ Πατρός. ∆ιά τοῦτο, ὅστις πιστεύει ὅτι τό Πνεῦμα τό ἅγιον οὐκ ἐκπορεύεται ἀπό τοῦ Υἱοῦ, ἐν ὁδῷ ἀπωλείας ἐστίν. Ὅτι δέ τό Πνεῦμα τό ἅγιον ἐκ τοῦ Υἱοῦ ἐστιν ἀμέσως, ἀπό δέ τοῦ Πατρός μεσιτεύοντος τοῦ Υἱοῦ, διαμαρτύρεται ὁ μακάριος Γρηγόριος ὁ Νυσσαέων, οὕτω λέγων· Τό ἀπαράλλακτον τῆς φύσεως ὁμολογοῦντες, τήν κατά τό αἴτιον καί αἰτιατόν διαφοράν οὐκ ἀρνούμεθα· ἐν ᾧ μόνῳ διακρίνεσθαι τό ἕτερον ἀπό τοῦ ἑτέρου καταλαμβάνομεν· τό μέν αἴτιον πιστεύειν εἶναι· τό δέ, ἐξ αἰτίου.
