ιε´. Guard yourself from incontinence and hatred, and do not find a stumbling block in the time of your prayer.

ιστ´. Just as it is not possible to find perfumes in mud, so neither in the soul of one who holds a grudge the fragrance of love.

ιζ´. Nobly control anger and desire, and be rid of evil thoughts most quickly.

ιη´. Secret work destroys vainglory, and to despise no one drives away pride.

ιθ´. A characteristic of vainglory is hypocrisy and falsehood; and of pride, conceit and envy.

κ´. A ruler is he who has ruled himself, and subjected both soul and body to reason. κα´. The genuineness of a friend is shown in temptation, when of necessity a partaker

he becomes. κβ´. Secure the senses by the way of stillness, and judge the thoughts

that stand over the heart. κγ´. Towards grievous thoughts, respond without holding a grudge; but towards the pleasure-loving

be disposed with hostility. κδ´. Stillness and prayer, and love, and self-control is a four-harnessed chariot, unto

leading the mind up to heaven. κε´. Waste away your flesh with fasting and vigilance, and you will drive out the executioner of

the thought of pleasure. κστ´. As wax melts before the face of fire, so from the fear of God an unclean

thought. κζ´. A bad loss for a prudent soul is to linger in a blameworthy passion. κη´. Endure the onsets of grievous and painful things; for through these you

the providence of God purifies. κθ´.Having cast off matter and renounced the world; renounce henceforth also the

evil thoughts. λ´. The proper work of the mind is to be always occupied with the words of God. λα´. Just as it is the work of God to administer the world, so too of the soul to govern the body. λβ´. With what hope shall we meet Christ, to the pleasures of the flesh until now

being enslaved? (1432) λγ´. Hardship and sorrow destroy pleasure, whether voluntary, or from providence

brought on. λδ´. Avarice is the matter of the passions, as it increases the all-encompassing pleasure. λε´. The failure of pleasure begets sorrow; and pleasure is yoked with every passion. λστ´. With what measure you measure to your body, conversely by God will be measured back

to you. λζ'. The works of divine judgments are the just recompense of the things through the body

that have been done. λη´. Virtue and knowledge beget immortality; the deprivation of which has become the mother of death. λθ´. Godly sorrow destroys pleasure; and the destruction of pleasure is the resurrection

of the soul. μ´. Dispassion is the immovability of the soul towards evil; which it is impossible to attain without the mercy

of Christ.

ιζ´. Κράτει γενναίως θυμοῦ καί ἐπιθυμίας, καί πονηρῶν λογισμῶν τάχιστα ἀπαλλάττῃ.

ιη´. Ἀναιρεῖ κενοδοξίαν ἡ κρυπτή ἐργασία, ἀπελαύνει δέ ὑπερηφανίαν τό μηδένα ἐξουθενεῖν.

ιθ´. Ἴδιον κενοδοξίας ὑπόκρισις καί ψεῦδος· τῆς δέ ὑπερηφανίας, ἡ οἴησις καί φθόνος.

κ´. Ἄρχων ἐκεῖνος ὁ ἑαυτοῦ ἄρξας, καί ψυχήν καί σῶμα τῷ λόγῳ ὑποτάξας. κα´. Γνησιότης φίλου ἐν πειρασμῷ δείκνυται, ἡνίκα τῆς ἀνάγκης συγκοινωνός

γένηται. κβ´. Ἀσφάλισαι τάς αἰσθήσεις τῷ τρόπῳ τῆς ἡσυχίας, καί δίκασον τούς λογισμούς

ἐφεστῶτας τῇ καρδίᾳ. κγ´. Πρός τούς λυπηρούς λογισμούς, ἀμνησικάκως ἀπάντα· πρός δέ τούς φιλοδόνους

ἐχθρωδῶς διάκεισο. κδ´. Ἡσυχία καί προσευχή, καί ἀγάπη, καί ἐγκράτεια τετράπλοκόν ἐστιν ἅρμα, εἰς

οὐρανούς ἀνάγον τόν νοῦν. κε´. Τῆξον τήν σάρκα σου ἀσιτίᾳ καί ἀγρυπνίᾳ, καί ἀπελαύνεις τόν δήμιον τῆς

ἡδονῆς λογισμοῦ. κστ´. Ὡς τήκεται κηρός ἀπό προσώπου πυρός, οὕτως ἀπό φόβου Θεοῦ ἀκάθαρτος

λογισμός. κζ´. Κακή ζημία ψυχῆς συνετῆς ἐγχρονίσαι πάθει ψεκτῷ. κη´. Ὑπόμεινον τάς τῶν λυπηρῶν καί ὀδυνηρῶν ἐπαγωγάς· διά γάρ τούτων σε

καθαίρει ἡ τοῦ Θεοῦ πρόνοια. κθ´.Ῥίψας τήν ὕλην καί τῷ κόσμῳ ἀποταξάμενος· ἀπόταξαι λοιπόν καί τοῖς

πονηροῖς λογισμοῖς. λ´. Ἴδιον ἔργον ὑπάρχει τοῦ νοῦ, τό λόγοις Θεοῦ σχολάζειν ἀεί. λα´. Ὥσπερ ἔργον Θεοῦ διοικῆσαι τόν κόσμον, οὕτω καί ψυχῆς κυβερνᾷν τό σῶμα. λβ´. Ποίᾳ ἐλπίδι τῷ Χριστῷ ἀπαντήσομεν, ταῖς τῆς σαρκός ἡδοναῖς μέχρι τοῦ νῦν

πεπραγμένων. λη´. Ἀθανασίαν τίκτει ἀρετή καί γνῶσις· ὧν ἡ στέρησις, τοῦ θανάτου γέγονε μήτηρ. λθ´. Λύπη κατά Θεόν ἀναιρεῖ ἡδονήν· ἡδονῆς δέ ἀναίρεσις, ἀνάστασις ὑπάρχει

ψυχῆς. μ´. Ἀπάθειά ἐστιν ἀκινησία ψυχῆς πρός κακίαν· ἧς τυχεῖν ἀμήχανον ἄνευ ἐλέους

Χριστοῦ.
