23. The first renunciation is detachment from things, and the second and third are detachment from the passions and from ignorance.
24. One who wishes is easily detached from things, but not with little labor, from the passions for them.
25. Control desire, and you will overcome anger; for this is the cause of the disturbance of anger.
26. Have we been freed from passionate thoughts, and of pure and immaterial
do we enjoy prayer or not yet?
27. A great mind, is one freed from the passions, and separated from created things, and in God
abides.
28. In these three things the one who is advancing philosophizes: in the commandments, in the
dogmas, and in the faith of the Trinity.
29. A mind stripped of passions is found in these things: in bare thoughts, in the
contemplation of beings, in the eternal light.
30. (1452) The worst passions are hidden in our souls; but they appear then, when the
things are tested.
31. Sometimes the mind remains untroubled, having attained partial dispassion; but it is untested
due to the absence of things.
32. The passions are stirred through these three things: through both memory and temperament,
and sense-perception, as has been said before.
33. The mind, having shut out sense-perception, and balanced the temperament, against memory alone
has its war.
34. The passions are then stirred by the senses, whenever self-control is not present, and
spiritual love.
35. Moderate fasting, and vigilance, and psalmody are naturally suited to balance the temperament
of the body.
36. These three things clearly alter the temperament for the worse: the diet's
disorder, the change of the air, and the touch of demons.
37. Passionate memories are stripped away by these things: by prayer, and reading, and
self-control, and love.
38. First shut off sense-perception with stillness, and then with the weapons of the virtues
wage war against memories.
39. Evil in thought is the misuse of thoughts; but in act
sin is the misuse of things.
40. The misuse of thoughts and things is, not to piously and justly with the
both make use of.
41. There are bonds, blameworthy passions, holding the mind in perceptible
things.
42. That man has perfect dispassion, who is neither affected by things, nor by
their memories.
43. A good soul benefits its neighbor, and being treated ungratefully is long-suffering with him,
and suffering endures the things from him.
44. There are evils, wicked thoughts, which he who does not renounce, is not a disciple
of knowledge.
45. He who hears Christ, enlightens himself, and he who imitates Him, is corrected.

ἀπολαύομεν προσευχῆς ἤ οὔπω; κζ´. Μέγας νοῦς, ὁ τῶν παθῶν ἀπαλλαγείς, καί τῶν ὄντων χωρισθείς, καί ἐν τῷ Θεῷ
διάγων. κη´. Ἐν τοῖς τρισί τούτοις ὁ προκόπτων φιλοσοφεῖ, ἐν ταῖς ἐντολαῖς, ἐν τοῖς
δόγμασι, καί ἐν τῇ πίστει τῆς Τριάδος. κθ´. Νοῦς παθῶν γυμνωθείς ἐν τούτοις εὑρίσκεται, ἐν τοῖς ψιλοῖς νοήμασι, ἐν τῇ
θεωρίᾳ τῶν ὄντων, ἐν τῷ ἀϊδίῳ φωτί. λ´. (1452) Κάκιστα πάθη ἐν ταῖς ψυχαῖς ἡμῶν κέκρυπται· τότε δέ φαίνεται, ὅταν τά
πράγματα ἐλέγχωνται. λα´. Ἀνενόχλητος μένει ἔσθ᾿ ὅτι ὁ νοῦς, μερικῆς τυχών ἀπαθείας· ἀδόκιμος δέ ἐστιν
διά τήν τῶν πραγμάτων ἀπουσίαν. λβ´. Κινοῦνται τά πάθη διά τῶν τριῶν τούτων, διά τε τῆς μνήμης καί τῆς κράσεως,
καί τῆς αἰσθήσεως, ὡς πρείρηται. λγ´. Ὁ νοῦς τήν τε αἴσθησιν ἀποκλείσας, καί τήν κρᾶσιν ὁμαλίσας, πρός μόνην τήν
μνήμην ἔχει τόν πόλεμον. λδ´. Ὑπό τῶν αἰσθήσεων τότε τά πάθη κινοῦνται, ὁπηνίκα ἐγκράτεια μή παρῇ, καί
ἀγάπη πνευματική. λε´. Νηστεία σύμμετρος, καί ἀγρυπνία, καί ψαλμῳδία πέφηκεν ὁμαλίζειν τήν κρᾶσιν
τοῦ σώματος. λστ´. Τά τρία ταῦτα τήν κρᾶσιν κατά τό χεῖρον δῆλον ὅτι ἀλλοιοῦσιν, ἡ τῆς διαίτης
ἀταξία, ἡ τῶν ἀέρων μεταβολή, καί ἡ τῶν δαιμόνων ἐπαφή. λζ´. Αἱ ἐμπαθεῖς μνῆμαι διά τούτων ψιλοῦνται, διά προσευχῆς, καί ἀναγνώσεως, καί
ἐγκρατείας, καί ἀγάπης. λη´. Τήν αἴσθησιν πρῶτον τῇ ἡσυχίᾳ ἀπόκλεισον, καί τότε τοῖς ὅπλοις τῶν ἀρετῶν
πρός τάς μνήμας πολέμησον. λθ´. Ἡ κατά διάνοιαν κακία, ἡ παράχρησίς ἐστι τῶν νοημάτων· ἡ δέ κατ᾿ ἐνέργειαν
ἁμαρτία ἡ παράχρησίς ἐστι τῶν πραγμάτων. μ´. Νοημάτων καί πραγμάτων ἐστίν παράχρησις, τό μή εὐσεβῶς καί δικαίως τοῖς
ἀμφοτέροις χρήσασθαι μα´. ∆εσμά ὑπάρχουσι, πάθη ψεκτά, κατέχοντα τόν νοῦν ἐν τοῖς αἰσθητοῖς
πραγμάτων. μβ´. Ἐκεῖνος τελείαν ἔχει ἀπάθειαν, ὁ μηδέ πρός τά πράγματα πάσχων, μηδέ πρός
τάς μνήμας αὐτῶν. μγ´. Ψυχή ἀγαθή εὐεργετεῖ τόν πλησίον, καί ἀγνωμονουμένη μακροθυμεῖ ἐπ᾿ αὐτῷ,
καί πάσχουσα ὑπομένει τά παρ᾿ αὐτοῦ. μδ´. Ὑπάρχοντά ἐστι κακά, λογισμοί πονηροί, οἶς ὁ μή ἀποτασσόμενος, οὐ μαθητεύει
τῇ γνώσει. με´. Χριστοῦ ὁ ἀκούων, ἑαυτόν φωταγωγεῖ, καί ὁ μιμούμενος αὐτόν, διορθοῦται.
