μστ´. Vengefulness is a leprosy of the soul; it comes from dishonors, or losses, or suspicious thoughts.
μζ´. The Lord blinds an envious mind, because it is unjustly grieved at the good things of a neighbor.
μη´. A slanderous soul has a three-pronged tongue; for it harms itself, and the one who hears, and, know that, also the one who is slandered.
μθ´. (1453) One who bears no malice is he who prays for the one who has grieved him; and he who does not spare gifts is delivered from vengefulness.
ν´. The death of the soul is hatred toward a neighbor; this the tongue of the slanderer has and practices.
να´. Acedia is negligence of the soul; and a soul is negligent when it loves pleasure. νβ´. He who loves Jesus trains himself in labors, and by endurance of labors drives out acedia. νγ´.The soul is strengthened through the labors of ascetic practice, and by doing all things with measure drives away
acedia. νδ´. He who controls his belly withers desire, and his mind is not enslaved to thoughts of fornication.
νε´. The mind of the continent man is a temple of the Holy Spirit; but that of the glutton, a dwelling-place
of crows. νστ´. Satiety from a variety of foods creates desire, but lack sweetens even
plain bread itself. νζ´. He who rejoices with the one who is envied, unknown to the one who envies, is delivered from envy. νη´. Distance yourself from one who lives carelessly, even if he possesses a great name among many.
νθ´. Acquire a hard-working man as a friend, and you will find a shelter for your own faults. ξ´. The careless man has been sold to many masters, and as they lead him, so he lives. ξα´. He is well-disposed to you as a friend in time of peace, and in time of temptation he wars as an enemy.
ξβ´. He lays down his life for you before the stirring of the passions, and when they are stirred,
he takes your life. ξγ´. Fallow land is filled with thorns, and a careless soul with unclean passions. ξδ´. A prudent mind bridles its soul, and disciplines the body, and brings the passions into subjection.
ξε´. The outward movements are signs of what is within, just as the fruits they bear are of unknown trees.
ξς´. Words and deeds expose a hypocrite, and bring the hidden
false prophet to light. ξζ´. A dishonored mind does not discipline its soul, and from love and self-control
it removes it. ξη´. The cause of wicked thoughts is an evil habit, composed of vainglory and pride and
arrogance. ξθ´. The characteristics of the aforementioned are hypocrisy, and deceit, craftiness and irony, and the
utterly wicked lie. ο´. Envy and strife, rage and anger, grief and
vengefulness serve the aforesaid.

μστ´. Ἡ μνησικακία λέπρα ἐστί ψυχῆς· συμβαίνει δέ αὐτή ἀπό ἀτιμιῶν, ἤ ζημίας, ἤ λογισμῶν ὑπονοίας.
μζ´. Κύριος νοῦν φθονερόν ἐκτυφλοῖ, ὅτι λυπεῖται ἀδίκως ἐπί τοῖς ἀγαθοῖς τοῦ πλησίον.
μη´. Καταλάλος δέ ψυχή τρίβωλον ἔχων γλῶσσαν· ἑαυτόν γάρ καί τόν ἀκούοντα, ἴσθ᾿ ὅτι δέ καί τόν καταλαλούμενον βλάπτει.
μθ´. (1453) Ἀμνησίκακός ἐστιν ὁ προσευχόμενος ὑπέρ λυπήσαντος· καί ἀπαλλάττεται μνησικακίας ὁ μή φειδόμενος δώρων.
ν´. Θάνατος ψυχῆς μῖσος πρός τόν πλησίον· τοῦτον ἔχει καί πράττει ἡ τοῦ καταλάλου γλῶσσα.
να´. Ἀκηδία ἐστίν ὀλιγωρία ψυχῆς· ὀλιγωρεῖ δέ ψυχή φιληδονοῦσα. νβ´. Ἰησοῦν ὁ ἀγαπῶν γυμνάζεται ἐν πόνοις, καρτερίᾳ δέ πόνων ἐκδιώκει ἀκηδίαν. νγ´.Ῥώννυται ψυχή διά πόνων ἀσκήσεως, καί ἐν τῷ πάντα μέτρῳ ποιεῖν ἀπελαύνει
ἀκηδίαν. νδ´. Ὁ κρατῶν γαστρός, μαραίνει ἐπιθυμίαν, καί λογισμοῖς πορνείας οὐ δουλεύει ὀ
νοῦς αὐτοῦ. νε´. Νοῦς ἐγκρατοῦς ναός ἁγίου Πνεύματος· ὁ δέ τοῦ γαστριμάργου, κατοικητήριον
κοράκων. νστ´. Τῆς τῶν βρωμάτων ποικιλίας ὁ κόρος ποιεῖ ἐπιθυμίαν, ἡ δέ ἔνδεια ἡδύνει καί
αὐτόν ψιλόν τόν ἄρτον. νζ´. Ἀπαλλάττεται φθόνου ὁ συγχαίρων τῷ φθονουμένῳ κρυπτῶς τοῦ φθονοῦντος. νη´. Τοῦ ἀμελῶς βιοῦντος μάκρυνον σεαυτόν, κἄν ὄνομα μέγα παρά πολλοῖς
κέκτηται. νθ´. Ἄνδρα φιλόπονον κτῆσαι φίλον, καί εὑρήσεις σκέπην τῶν σῶν σφαλμάτων. ξ´. ∆εσπόταις πολλοῖς ὁ ἀμελής πέπραται, καί ὡς ἄγουσιν αὐτόν, οὕτως διαγίνεται. ξα´. Εὐνοεῖ σοι ὡς φίλος ἐν καιρῷ εἰρήνης, καί ἐν καιρῷ πειρασμοῦ ὡς ἐχθρός
πολεμεῖ. ξβ´. Τήν ψυχήν τίθησιν ὑπέρ σοῦ πρό τῆς κινήσεως τῶν παθῶν, καί ὅταν κινηθῶσιν,
τήν ψυχήν σου λαμβάνει. ξγ´. Ἡ χερσωθεῖσα γῆ, ἀκανθῶν πεπλήρωται, καί ἀμελής ψυχή παθῶν ἀκαθάρτων. ξδ´. Νοῦς φρόνιμος χαλινοῖ ψυχήν αὐτοῦ, καί ὑποπιάζει τό σῶμα, καί δουλαγωγεῖ
τά πάθη. ξε´. Σημεῖα τῶν ἔνδον τά προφανῆ κινήματα, ὡς καί τῶν ἀγνώστων δένδρων οἱ
προφερόμενοι καρποί. ξς´. Ὑποκριτήν ἐλέγχουσιν οἱ λόγοι καί τά ἔργα, καί τόν κεκρυμμένον
ψευδοπροφήτην εἰς φανέρωσιν ἄγουσιν. ξζ´. Νοῦς ἠλογημένος οὐ παιδεύει ψυχήν αὐτοῦ, καί ἀγάπης καί τῆς ἐγκρατείας
ἀπομακρύνει αὐτήν. ξη´. Ἐννοιῶν φαύλων αἰτία ἕξις πονηρά, ἀπό κενοδοξίας καί ὑπερηφανείας καί
ἀλαζονείας συνισταμένη. ξθ´. Ἴδια τῶν προειρημένων ὑπόκρισις, καί δόλος πανουργία τε καί εἰρωνεία, καί τό
πάμφαυλον ψεῦδος. ο´. ∆ουλεύουσιν τοῖς προλεχθεῖσι φθόνος καί ἔρις, θυμός καί ὀργή, λύπη καί
μνησικακία.
